Star Wars’ Next Live-Action TV Show Gets Major Release Update & a Big Clue to When It’ll Hit Disney+

Don’t expect the second season of Ahsoka anytime soon. Lucasfilm is now prioritizing big-screen Star Wars films and will only release one live-action TV show per year to allow time for movie production. While Andor season 2 was a critical success this year, the focus has shifted to Ahsoka season 2. Although a wrap party was held in September, filming didn’t officially finish until October 29th with star Rosario Dawson.

Forbes’ Paul Tassi has predicted when the second season of Ahsoka might be released. He observed that season one finished filming in October 2022 but didn’t air until August 2023 – a delay of ten months. If season two follows a similar timeline, he estimates it will likely premiere in August or September of 2026.

These Estimates Would Make Sense for Lucasfilm

Tassi isn’t thrilled with this possibility, explaining that it would create a three-year wait between seasons – a longer gap than even the one between the first two seasons of Wednesday. He finds the idea “absurd,” especially considering the current lack of confirmed plans for any other live-action Star Wars TV series.

Lucasfilm likely sees the release date as a good strategic move. While there’s been a lot of content from Marvel and Star Wars recently, it hasn’t been as successful as before. Disney is worried these popular brands are losing their impact and hopes to address this by releasing fewer projects. With The Mandalorian and Grogu scheduled for May 22, 2026, Lucasfilm probably wants to release their live-action show later in the year to create a more balanced schedule.

It’s typical for there to be about ten months between when a show finishes filming and when it’s released. Season 2 of Ahsoka will likely require a significant amount of visual effects work, as it’s using Stagecraft technology less than the first season. Disney and Lucasfilm have faced criticism for rushed VFX in the past, and they’ll want to avoid that this time. Considering the work involved, a ten-month gap is a reasonable timeframe to ensure everything looks polished.

Many Star Wars fans will likely be frustrated by the delay. However, with careful planning, a less frequent release schedule could actually make new Star Wars content feel special again – and the second season of Ahsoka could help reverse the trend of declining interest.
