Pokemon Go’s Latest Event Marks A Big Milestone In The Game’s 9 Year History

When Pokemon Go first launched in 2016, players could catch almost 150 different Pokemon. Niantic, the game developer, began with the most popular Pokemon from the Kanto region and gradually added more over time. Initially, new Pokemon were often released in groups, all from the same region. However, as Pokemon Go has been around longer, and the number of existing Pokemon is limited, the rate of new releases has slowed down. Now, the game boasts a record number of available Pokemon.

It’s been several years since the ninth generation of Pokémon games came out, and we still don’t know when the tenth generation will be added to Pokémon Go. This means the number of Pokémon from newer generations that haven’t been released in the mobile game is getting smaller. While there are still a few Pokémon missing that might surprise players, the list is shrinking. With the recent additions during the Go Wild Area 2025 event, Pokémon Go now includes 926 out of a total of 1025 Pokémon. As of November 7th, that leaves fewer than 100 Pokémon that aren’t yet available in the game.

What’s Next As Pokemon Go Runs Low on New Pokemon Debuts?

A recent update to Pokémon Go is a milestone for the game! As one player pointed out on Reddit, the addition of Impidimp, Morgrem, and Grimmsnarl – first revealed at a live event in Nagasaki – means there are now fewer than 100 Pokémon still to be released in the game. If you couldn’t make it to the event, these Pokémon will become available worldwide on November 15th, when the Pokémon Go Wild Area: Global event begins.

Today (11/7/2025) is a historic day for Pokémon GO, as there are now less than 100 unreleased Pokémon from the MSG

This information is based on Bulbapedia, a Pokemon wiki that tracks which Pokemon haven’t been released in Pokemon Go yet. While many Pokemon from the ninth generation are still to come, the number of older, missing Pokemon is decreasing. This makes players wonder how Niantic will keep the game interesting while we wait for the next generation. And when the new Pokemon do arrive, they’ll probably be released gradually to prevent players from completing the collection too quickly.

Many players have noted that Niantic still has ways to keep the game fresh. They can introduce things like Pokemon wearing costumes or rare, shiny versions, which gives players something new to collect without needing to add entirely new Pokemon. As one player cleverly put it, there’s a limited number of Pokemon, but an unlimited number of accessories they can wear!

Besides the different versions of Pokémon like Shiny, Shadow, and Costume Pokémon, Pokémon Go could still introduce more features similar to Mega Evolution and Max Battles. While Pokémon Legends: Z-A didn’t add many new Pokémon overall, it did bring some new Mega Evolutions that Pokémon Go can use. Plus, new Gigantamax and Dynamax Pokémon are constantly being added to the game.

Players are excited about the upcoming Dynamax Eevee event! This larger version of the popular Pokémon will appear in Pokémon Go starting Friday, November 21st, as part of a special Max Battle Weekend. It’s a great reason to get out and play, especially as the weather gets colder.

Besides the recent additions of Mega Evolutions and Max Raid Battles, some older features from the main Pokémon games haven’t made their way into Pokémon Go yet. Z-Moves and Tera Pokémon are two examples, and adding them could be a great way to keep the game exciting. It’s surprising to realize that after so many years, there are still fewer than 100 Pokémon that haven’t been released in Pokémon Go.
