Batman is a hugely popular and iconic character, first appearing in 1939 and remaining a comic book staple for over eight decades. Given his success, it’s natural that others have attempted to create similar heroes. The idea is simple: if Batman works so well, why wouldn’t a character with many of the same qualities also succeed? Many creators, including DC Comics themselves, have tried to replicate that success with their own versions of the Dark Knight.
DC Comics already has Batman, but they’ve often created characters inspired by him anyway. Sometimes, these initial copies evolved into popular heroes with their own unique identities. Here are five characters who started as Batman imitations but eventually became well-loved figures in their own right.
5) Ghost-Maker

Ghost-Maker is a relatively new character, first appearing in Batman #100 (2016). He was introduced as a fellow traveler and competitor of Bruce Wayne’s from their shared training days. Both aimed to become highly skilled fighters, but their motivations differed: Bruce wanted to protect the world, while Ghost-Maker focused on dismantling criminal organizations simply for the challenge. Notably, Ghost-Maker is a diagnosed psychopath, lacking empathy or fear. He essentially created his own, dangerous version of Batman, complete with a partner similar to Robin, known as Phantom-One.
Initially presented as a brutal take on Batman, Ghost-Maker has evolved into a compelling character in his own right. He’s not just a darker version of the Dark Knight; he’s a thrilling, albeit violent, vigilante. Boasting unwavering confidence and a full skillset, he’s a formidable force against criminals. His unique viewpoint – a true psychopath dedicated to fighting for justice – is worthy of exploration in his own dedicated series.
4) The Knight

The Knight first appeared in Batman #62 (1940) as essentially a British version of Batman. Inspired by Batman and Robin, Percy Sheldrake, the Earl of Wordenshire, created a heroic identity for himself and trained his son to be his sidekick, the Squire. The Knight was the first copycat hero to team up with the original Batman, eventually becoming a key member of groups like the Batmen of All Nations, the Club of Heroes, and Batman Incorporated. Over time, the Knight evolved from a simple imitation into a strong example of a lasting heroic legacy within DC Comics.
The Knight isn’t just one person; the title has been passed down through generations, with each new Knight building on the achievements of those who came before. It’s rare to see a heroic identity continue like this, especially without the original hero returning. That’s what makes the Knight so unique – they represent the enduring spirit of heroism in the United Kingdom. The Knight isn’t simply an imitation; they’re a shining example of how to create and sustain a lasting legacy, and that’s something worth recognizing.
3) Catman

Catman first appeared in Detective Comics #311 as essentially a villainous version of Batman, complete with a cat-based theme and a background as a wealthy Gotham socialite. Originally, he was simply a hunter trying to reclaim lost riches. However, Catman evolved into a much more complex character, eventually leading the Secret Six and becoming a man of honor and mystery. While he still operates outside the law, Catman now leans more towards being an anti-hero, driven by a strong personal code that guides whether he saves or destroys. This commitment to his own standards makes him a compelling and respected figure.
2) Midnighter

From the beginning, Midnighter, with his aggressive nature, dark costume, and incredible fighting abilities, was clearly inspired by Batman – first appearing in StormWatch #4 in 1997. While he initially shared many similarities with the Dark Knight, including cybernetic enhancements and a willingness to kill, Midnighter ultimately evolved into a unique character. Now, he’s a key member of the Authority and frequently teams up with Superman when dealing with particularly dangerous villains. Notably, Midnighter was also one of DC’s first openly gay characters, and he is married to his teammate, Apollo.
With so many Batman-like characters around, Midnighter is different because he’s more than just tough and focused on punishment. He’s deeply suspicious and acts quickly, but also fiercely loyal and prioritizes the well-being of those he cares about. While he’s not afraid to use brutal methods, he’s ultimately a hero dedicated to saving the world, and his perspective is truly unique and important.
1) Green Arrow

Green Arrow is arguably DC’s most successful attempt to create another hero like Batman. First appearing in More Fun Comics #73, he originally felt very similar to Batman, but with a Robin Hood twist – he even had a car modeled after the Batmobile, called the Arrowcar. However, Oliver Queen eventually evolved into a unique character, becoming a castaway who survived on a deserted island. He was also the first new hero to join the Justice League, and ultimately became known as DC’s champion for social justice.
Green Arrow consistently challenges societal issues and actively works to address them himself. He isn’t afraid to call out his fellow heroes when he believes they’ve gone too far, acting as the Justice League’s voice for social reform. However, he’s also deeply flawed, a result of his troubled past and a tendency to be inflexible – famously, he dismissed his young sidekick for drug use. This combination of passion and imperfection makes Green Arrow a unique hero, and he’s earned a place among the greatest that goes far beyond being simply a darker version of Batman. He’s known as the Green Arrow, and that name carries weight.
Man, it’s wild to think about how some of my favorite DC heroes started out basically trying to be Batman. But they totally evolved and became awesome in their own right! Now they’re huge parts of the DC Universe. Seriously, which one of these Batman-inspired characters do you like the most?
