In recent years, Solo Leveling has become incredibly popular outside of Japan, originating as a web novel by Chugong. It was then adapted into a webtoon by the late Jang Sung-Rak, telling the story of Jinwoo Sung, a weak monster hunter who discovers a unique system that’s like a video game. This system grants him incredible powers, including the ability to bring defeated enemies back to fight for him. The Solo Leveling anime, produced by A-1 Pictures, premiered in October 2024 and has since achieved significant success.
I’m so excited about Crunchyroll’s adaptation of Let’s Play! It originally started as a webtoon by Mongie, and the story is just fantastic. It follows Sam Young, a game developer who’s really down in the dumps after a harsh review of her first game – and the kicker? The critic, Marshall Law, turns out to be her new neighbor! As she tries to rebuild her reputation and take over her father’s gaming company, she starts this really interesting, complicated friendship with him. Plus, the animation is being handled by OLM, the studio behind the iconic Pokémon anime, so you know it’s going to look amazing!
Noblesse was one of the earliest manhwa series to be offered in English on WEBTOON, the leading digital platform for webcomics. Created by Son Je-Ho and Lee Kwang-Su, the story follows Cadis Etrama Di Raizel, an 800-year-old vampire nobleman. After waking up, he tries to adjust to modern life by going to high school. He quickly becomes embroiled in conflict with a shadowy organization that captures and experiments on people. An anime adaptation of the series premiered in October 2020.
Doctor Elise: The Royal Lady With the Lamp is a fresh take on the popular isekai story type often seen in anime. Originally created by Yuin and Mini and first published in 2017, the webtoon follows Elise, a once-spoiled and disliked empress. After being overthrown and executed by her people, she’s reborn as a doctor in modern Japan, retaining all her past memories. Tragically, she dies again in a plane crash, sending her back to her original time and body. Determined to make amends for her past mistakes, Elise uses her medical skills to benefit her country, as described by Crunchyroll. The anime version was produced by Maho Film, known for their work on I’m the Villainess, So I’m Taming the Final Boss.
Except for Lookism, each of the aforementioned series is available on Crunchyroll.
