The fifth and final season of Stranger Things will wrap up the show’s storyline, bringing it back to where it all began. Netflix has promised to resolve the central mysteries surrounding the Upside Down and the villain Vecna. While it won’t be easy to answer every question fans have, the creators, the Duffer Brothers, seem to be on the right track, especially after sharing a glimpse of the season’s first scene.
This scene takes us back to the very beginning, specifically November 1983, and shows Will (played by a younger Noah Schnapp) struggling to stay alive in the terrifying alternate dimension he’s trapped in. It’s a look at what he experienced while his friends and family desperately searched for him – a story we didn’t fully see when the show first aired. It also introduces a new puzzle to solve.
The video shows the Demogorgon bringing Will to Vecna, not killing him, suggesting Vecna has a specific plan for Will and declares it’s time to start. However, Barbara was also taken to the Upside Down around the same time. This raises the question: why was Will saved, while Barbara was killed?
Stranger Things Season 5 Should Reveal The Truth Behind Barb’s Death

Barb’s death in the first season of Stranger Things caused a lot of discussion and even upset fans, leading to a popular online campaign called “Justice For Barb.” Many viewers felt her death wasn’t taken seriously enough by the characters in the show, and that it was overshadowed by Will’s disappearance. The outcry was significant enough that the second season addressed it directly, bringing in Barb’s parents, giving Nancy a stronger focus on finding out what happened to her, and finally acknowledging Barb’s death with a funeral.
It looks like Stranger Things isn’t finished with Barb’s story. We know her body will appear in Season 5 (according to Time), possibly during flashbacks to the first season. This could finally reveal why Barb died, but Will Byers survived. Will seems to have something unique about him – he easily could have been killed by the Demogorgon or Vecna. This might connect to theories about potential powers he has, or perhaps Vecna, like Henry Creel, saw something in Will – a kindred spirit he could use for his plans, even if Will didn’t want to participate.
Barb’s death probably just happened because she was unfortunately in the wrong place at the wrong time, but it would be good to learn more about it now, years later. The show never really gave her story a proper ending, even in Season 2, and now there’s an opportunity to finally give her some closure.
Stranger Things Season 5 will release on Netflix in three parts on the following dates:
- Vol. 1 (Episodes 1-4) – Thanksgiving
- Vol. 2 (Episodes 5-7) – Christmas Day
- Vol. 3 (Episode 8) – New Year’s Eve.
