While HBO Max viewers are still waiting for the next installment of It: Welcome to Derry, Paramount+ subscribers now have another Stephen King story to enjoy. Hollywood has been adapting King’s novels for nearly 50 years, starting with Carrie in 1976, and many of these films and series are now available on streaming services. Paramount+ added a particularly divisive King adaptation as part of an update on November 1st.
You can now watch the movie Cujo on Paramount+. Released in 1983 alongside other Stephen King adaptations like The Dead Zone and Christine, Cujo is still considered a particularly debated adaptation of his work. The film, directed by Lewis Teague and based on King’s 1981 novel, stars Dee Wallace and Danny Pintauro as a mother and son who find themselves trapped in their car, desperately trying to escape a St. Bernard that has become dangerously rabid.
Cujo Changed a Major Part of King’s Novel
Many of Stephen King’s stories have been adapted for film, but Cujo remains particularly debated among fans. Unlike most successful King adaptations that closely follow the book, Cujo took a significant departure. The movie drastically changed the novel’s bleak ending—where young Tad dies from dehydration—to a more hopeful scene where both Tad and his mother, Donna, survive and reunite with Vic after Donna kills the rabid dog. Director Lewis Teague made this change because he believed audiences couldn’t handle the child’s death. While some felt this lessened the story’s intense horror and emotional impact, King himself later admitted he appreciated the alteration, as his book’s ending had received criticism.
The film’s ending, which some felt was more suitable for a movie than the darker conclusion of Stephen King’s book, received a varied response. Currently, it has a 60% rating from critics and a 46% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Despite debate about the ending and concerns from animal lovers regarding the story’s rabid dog, Cujo is still considered one of the most impactful adaptations of King’s work. It stands out as one of the few horror films where the fear comes from a believable, realistic situation, rather than from supernatural elements.
What’s New on Paramount+?
Paramount+ has added a bunch of new movies to its streaming library, including Cujo. Joining the platform on November 1st were also popular titles like 21 Jump Street, Blades of Glory, the Bridget Jones series, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, several Indiana Jones films, Shakespeare in Love, and Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby. So, Paramount+ subscribers have plenty of new options to choose from!
Get into the holiday spirit with Paramount+ this November! They’re streaming a selection of Christmas movies, including popular choices like Deck the Halls, Reindeer Games, and Scrooged.
