Kim Kardashian is all about love and war.
The actress plays a successful divorce lawyer in Ryan Murphy’s new show, All’s Fair. She works at a family law firm owned by women, alongside Naomi Watts and Niecy Nash.
Just how much of the show’s story is real? Each episode is full of luxury, excitement, and plenty of drama. Interestingly, Kim’s divorce lawyer, Laura Wasser – who Kim has said inspired her character Allura Grant – is sharing details about the case for free.
When it comes to understanding what’s real, you have to be skeptical of what you see on television, especially when it comes to shows featuring people like Ryan Murphy and Kim Kardashian, explained Laura in an interview with TopMob News. She and HelloPrenup founder Julia Rodgers both emphasized that television is meant to be entertainment – that’s why we enjoy watching it and going to the movies.
Laura, a managing partner at her father Dennis Wasser’s firm, Wasser Cooperman & Mandles, doubts that Allura, Liberty, and Emerald – all experienced attorneys in their twenties – could afford a private jet or comfortably participate in a high-end jewelry auction.
I’ve been practicing law for over thirty years, and I want to be clear: I don’t own a private plane. I’ve never flown to New York, nor have I ever participated in auctions at places like Sotheby’s or Christie’s, even staying in the area to do so. I do have one good car, which is usually paid for by my law firm since I need it for traveling to court.
The lawyer, known for handling divorces for celebrities like Ryan Reynolds, Heidi Klum, and Angelina Jolie, jokingly said, “I’m not sure where they’re getting all this money, but I’m happy for them.”
Don’t anticipate divorce lawyers showing up in dramatic outfits like the striking gray dress Kim wore – the one with the attached, veiled hood.

Dealing with wealthy and famous clients can be really difficult. Sometimes, it feels like we’re facing blackmail, for lack of a better word. It happens often because we work hard to protect our clients from negative media attention and ‘cancel culture’.
And it’s especially useful in California, where all divorce filings are public.
Laura explained that anything submitted through the family law portal – statements, documents, even things that might not be allowed as evidence – becomes public record. She cautioned that maintaining privacy in these cases can be difficult, despite best efforts, because information often becomes accessible to others.
Julia pointed out that the clothing was definitely not typical work attire for family law attorneys – think more high fashion than courtroom chic! She described it as simply ‘beautiful, beautiful fashion!’
Despite its dramatic license, the show does get a few things right, like how lawyers sometimes handle negotiations. For example, the firm uncovers compromising photos of a husband trying to leave his wife, Grace Gummer’s character, without giving her any financial support. They also find recordings of another husband pressuring his wife, Jessica Simpson’s character, Lee-Ann, to undergo more cosmetic surgery than she desired.
Laura doesn’t fully embrace these methods, but they are effective.

Dealing with wealthy and famous clients can be really challenging. Unfortunately, we often encounter situations that feel like extortion. We work hard to protect our clients from negative media attention and ‘cancel culture,’ and that sometimes leads to these difficult scenarios.
And it’s especially useful in California, where all divorce filings are public.
Laura explained that anything submitted through the family law portal—statements you make or documents you upload—becomes public record, even if it isn’t officially allowed as evidence. She warned that it can be risky because even though you try to keep things confidential, privacy isn’t guaranteed during legal proceedings.
Julia, a strong advocate for prenuptial agreements for all couples, praised the show’s realistic depiction of them, especially how they addressed the needs of women of different ages.

While some parts are likely exaggerated for television, I believe many of the negotiations we see are genuine. For instance, Grace signed her prenuptial agreement at a young age, which is a clear case of how a prenup could have offered her more protection.
She explained that a good prenuptial agreement considers what might happen in the future. In Grace’s case, if the agreement had anticipated her husband’s later success, it could have offered her more financial security.
Laura felt the show—featuring stars like Sarah Paulson, Glenn Close, and Teyana Taylor—particularly excelled at portraying the universal experience of heartbreak, regardless of wealth or status.

I’ve noticed something really striking while listening to people share their stories. Almost everyone asks themselves, ‘How did this happen? How did I allow this to happen?’ It’s such a common feeling. What really resonates with me is that divorce, unfortunately, levels the playing field. It’s something so many of us go through, and it really does equalize everyone’s experience.
She explained that this person was someone you were close to, both physically and emotionally – someone you shared intimate moments with, and perhaps even experienced life-changing events like childbirth alongside. Losing that deep connection is significant. She asked how you were coping with that loss and what it felt like to no longer have them in your life.
With new episodes of the Hulu series featuring Allura, Liberty, and Emerald arriving every Tuesday, let’s take a look at some of the priciest celebrity divorces in Hollywood.

As a lifestyle expert, I remember when the news about the golf star’s infidelity completely rocked the world. It wasn’t just a single instance, but reports surfaced about numerous affairs. Sadly, this led to the end of his marriage to Elin Nordegren, a beautiful Swedish model, and they officially divorced in August 2010 after almost six years together and raising two children. While the exact details of their settlement weren’t made public, it was widely reported that he paid her a staggering $750 million in the divorce.

While the saying goes “Love Don’t Cost a Thing,” it seems things didn’t quite work out that way for Jennifer Lopez. After meeting on the set of her music video directed by Cris Judd, they married in September 2001. Unfortunately, less than a year later, J.Lo filed for divorce, claiming they had irreconcilable differences. Though the details of their settlement weren’t made public, many sources report that J.Lo paid Judd $14 million.

One of Hollywood’s most expensive divorces happened between Mel Gibson and his wife of 28 years, Robyn Gibson. Because they didn’t have a prenuptial agreement, Robyn reportedly received half of Mel’s $850 million fortune. After two years of negotiations, the couple finally reached a settlement, as reported by TopMob News. They share seven children together.

When the pop star and her director husband divorced in 2008, she had to give him a significant portion of her wealth – they hadn’t signed a prenuptial agreement. Reports at the time estimated the settlement to be between $72 and $92 million, according to her representative.

Paul McCartney and Heather Mills married in 2002, but their relationship ended after only four years. Their divorce was finalized in 2008 following a lengthy legal process, and reports indicate Mills received around $48.7 million from McCartney’s wealth. She also allegedly received $70,000 each month to support their four-year-old daughter, Beatrice.

Donald and Ivana Trump married in a grand ceremony in 1977 and divorced in 1992, following reports that Donald had an affair with Marla Maples, a former beauty queen. After 15 years of marriage and raising three children together, Ivana reportedly received a $20 million divorce settlement, though the details remain confidential.

Kevin and Cindy were college sweethearts who married in 1978 while still students. Their marriage ended in divorce in 1994 after 16 years. Together, they had three children: Annie, Lily, and Joe. The divorce settlement reportedly included $80 million for Cindy.

Neil reportedly began a relationship with the TV producer while he was still married to his first wife, Jane Posner. Marcia married the singer-songwriter in 1969 and they had two sons, Jesse and Micah. They divorced after 25 years, with Marcia receiving $150 million – half of Neil’s earnings. Despite the costly divorce, Neil later said he felt it was worth the money, stating that “she’s worth every penny.”

Michael and Juanita Jordan, who were married in 1989 and have three children, finalized their divorce in 2006 after a brief attempt to reconcile. They originally wed in Las Vegas, and the divorce settlement was reportedly worth $168 million, paid by Michael.

Country music star Kenny Rogers went through five divorces, and his split from his fourth wife, Marianne Gordon, was the most costly. They were married for 16 years and had one child together, but divorced in 1993. Reports say Rogers paid $60 million as part of the settlement.

Lionel Richie and Diane Alexander divorced in 2003 after seven years of marriage and two children together. Their split was reportedly due to disagreements they couldn’t resolve. During the divorce proceedings, Diane requested $15,000 a month for clothing and $20,000 a year for plastic surgery. The divorce settlement ultimately cost Lionel Richie an estimated $20 million.

In June 2000, the businessman married his fourth wife, an actress he’d met at a Vanity Fair party following the Oscars. The couple divorced in 2006. Reports indicate Ellen received a very large settlement, and also made over $20 million selling jewelry that her ex-husband had previously gifted her.

The actress had a complicated relationship with the director. They dated on and off throughout the late 1970s, even briefly separating for a relationship with her Honeysuckle Rose co-star, Willie Nelson. They eventually married in 1985, but divorced just four years later in 1989. Reports indicate the divorce settlement was around $100 million.

As a lifestyle expert, I’ve seen many relationships evolve, and sometimes, even after a long run, things just don’t work out. Harrison Ford and Melissa Mathison were together for 18 years, even trying to reconnect briefly, but ultimately decided to separate in 2001 and officially divorced in 2004. They share two children, and after two decades of marriage, with a substantial amount of wealth involved and no prenuptial agreement, reports surfaced that Melissa received a settlement of around $118 million. It’s a reminder that even high-profile relationships face challenges, and financial considerations are a big part of the process.

Alex and Cynthia divorced in 2008 after being together for six years and having two children. The details of their expensive divorce settlement have not been made public.

The Academy Award-winning actor married the 19-year-old daughter of an Austrian diplomat in 1977, and they had a son the following year. Diane filed for divorce in 1995 and reportedly received a $45 million settlement, plus a portion of the profits from some of Michael’s work during their marriage.

After 23 years of marriage and two children, Brooke and Nick, Linda divorced her husband when she discovered he was having an affair with Christiane Plante. The divorce settlement reportedly exceeded $30 million and included over 70% of their cash and assets, several luxury cars, a $3 million property settlement, and 40% ownership of his businesses.

Mick Jagger, the lead singer of The Rolling Stones, married model Jerry Hall in 1990. Their marriage ended in 1999 when Jerry discovered Mick had a child with Brazilian model Luciana Morad. After being together for nine years, Jerry reportedly received $25 million in their divorce settlement.

The winner of the Daytona 500 married Brooke in 1994, but they divorced in 2002 after eight years. Although they didn’t have children, the divorce settlement was reportedly a significant $15 million.
