2025 is proving to be a fantastic year for Hatsune Miku. Her recent success – surpassing this year’s hit film Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle in popularity – marks another significant achievement for the Vocaloid character, especially following the release of her own anime movie earlier in the year.
XING Inc., the company behind the popular karaoke system JOYSOUND, recently surveyed its users to determine their favorite artists and anime. The results, released on November 4th, showed that the rhythm game Hatsune Miku: Colorful Stage!—which has been downloaded over 39 million times globally and is inspiring a 2025 anime film, Colorful Stage! The Movie: A Miku Who Can’t Sing—was the most popular choice in the anime and game category. It even outperformed the highest-grossing anime film of all time, Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, which came in fourth. The poll included responses from 1,621 JOYSOUND users and was conducted between September 19th and October 13th, 2025.
Hatsune Miku Tops New Official Survey, Overtaking Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle
Hatsune Miku began as a singing voice program created from the voice of Japanese voice actress Saki Fujita. Since her debut in 2007, she’s become incredibly popular, inspiring fans to create over 100,000 original songs and leading to impressive holographic concerts. She’s now a major part of Japan’s music and karaoke scene. Recent rankings show that Miku is the most popular, followed by Ensemble Stars!!, a well-known idol game with an anime series, and Touken Ranbu Online, another game that also has multiple anime adaptations. These three franchises held the top three spots in the same ranking last year as well.
Miku recently won a poll, following the successful release of her first full-length movie, Colorful Stage! The Movie: A Miku Who Can’t Sing. The film was especially popular in the United States, where it opened in seventh place in theaters this April. This was a stronger start than in Japan, where it made around US$2.1 million during its opening weekend. Ultimately, the movie earned over US$3.3 million in the U.S., attracting both dedicated fans and new viewers, and received a very positive audience score of 95% on Popcornmeter.
The movie Colorful Stage! The Movie: A Miku Who Can’t Sing, created by the renowned studio P.A. Works and director Hiroyuki Hata, has been celebrated for its touching story and memorable music. It follows a virtual singer facing a serious problem: despite her best efforts, her songs aren’t connecting with listeners. After seeing Ichika Hoshino perform with genuine emotion, a disheartened Miku appears on Ichika’s phone. Hoping Ichika can help her reach an audience, Miku asks for assistance, and a new journey begins for the two of them.
