Nicolas Cage is known for dealing with on-set craziness, but even he was surprised when a swarm of bees descended on the set of his new movie, The Carpenter’s Son. He plays Joseph in this religious horror-drama. While some online joked it was divine intervention, Cage doesn’t believe it was. However, the incident sounds even more unbelievable than the famous bee scene from his movie The Wicker Man.
Nicolas Cage recently discussed the infamous bee attack that happened while filming on a mountaintop in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. Many immediately thought of his famous line, “Not the bees!” from The Wicker Man, but Cage quickly clarified with a laugh that his film, The Carpenter’s Son, isn’t a comedy and the bee incident wasn’t a planned joke. He explained it was simply a mistake during filming. He went on to describe what happened:
I think what happened wasn’t some kind of lucky break, but simply poor planning and a lack of thorough research during location scouting.
Surprisingly, the main actor isn’t angry with the bees – he actually feels bad for them, which is perfectly in line with Nicolas Cage’s unique personality. He went on to say:
Those bees were actually protected, and honestly, I’d be upset too if I were a bee and a film crew was disturbing my home with bright lights. It was a really bad idea – someone should have known better. They kept insisting on filming right there with the bees, and people ended up getting stung and feeling sick. It wasn’t some kind of fate or cosmic message; it was just plain foolishness. There was a complete lack of respect for nature and the animals living there.
It’s classic Nicolas Cage to recognize animals as our “family.” It’s really admirable to see an actor support animal welfare and question a poorly considered decision made during filming.

The wasp issues didn’t stop with the initial incident involving Nicolas Cage. Director Lotfy Nathan explained to EW that a bigger problem arose when they had to shut down an elaborate set designed to look like a leper colony. Apparently, a new swarm of wasps was attracted by chemicals used to decorate the set. As soon as they arrived, filming stopped completely, according to the director.
About halfway through filming, we arrived at a new location – a mountaintop set built to look like a leper colony. The art department had used some chemicals to finish the set, and overnight, these attracted a huge swarm of wasps. No one realized it until we were ready to film the next day. We had to cancel shooting for the day, which caused a lot of problems. Some people joked it was ‘divine intervention,’ but it was probably just a lot of angry wasps.

32 Times A Nicolas Cage Character Went Bananas
I recently checked out The Carpenter’s Son, and it’s a really fascinating film. It’s directed by Lotfy Nathan and is actually based on an old, lesser-known religious text called the Infancy Gospel of Thomas. The movie focuses on the years of Jesus’s childhood that aren’t covered in the Bible, and it’s a pretty unique take. We follow young Jesus, played by Noah Jupe, along with his parents – FKA Twigs as his mother and Nicolas Cage as Joseph – as they try to survive in a world full of both wonder and danger. It’s not your typical religious movie; it mixes religious stories with a genuinely creepy, unsettling atmosphere, and really makes you think about things like faith, what it means to have power, and figuring out who you are.
Although the making of the film was difficult, reminiscent of challenging productions like The Passion of the Christ, Nicolas Cage insists no paranormal events occurred. There were no ghosts or strange signs, just the natural behavior of bees. While The Carpenter’s Son definitely had its share of problems during filming, Cage wants audiences to understand the movie itself is serious. He describes it as powerful, honest, and deeply emotional, and adds:
Everyone involved treated the story with great respect and handled it delicately. They avoided any sense of irony or playful distance.
Despite any behind-the-scenes energy, the actor known as Longlegs is fully dedicated to their newest part. They brought passion, a willingness to embrace challenges, and a strong respect for the narrative.
Horror fans can see Nic Cage in his new film, The Carpenter’s Son, which comes to theaters on November 14th.
