‘The Hangover’ Is Dominating Streaming on Netflix

Man, I’m really feeling it today – a total double hangover, if you know what I mean! It’s wild to think that over 15 years after it came out and crushed it in theaters, The Hangover, with Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, and Zach Galifianakis, is still a huge hit on streaming. And even the sequel, which everyone pretty much trashed back in 2011, is getting a ton of views! It just doesn’t seem to fade away.

Released in 2009, The Hangover quickly became a massive comedy hit, earning $469.3 million globally on a budget of just $35 million. It was also well-received by both critics and audiences, achieving scores of 79% and 84% respectively on Rotten Tomatoes. Here’s what the movie is about:

Okay, so the night before my friend Doug’s wedding was…intense. We all woke up with killer hangovers and things were seriously strange. There was a baby just…hanging out in the closet, and a tiger in the bathroom! But the worst part? Doug was nowhere to be found. He was supposed to be getting married! We immediately started searching everywhere, battling our hangovers, desperately trying to find him and get him to the church on time. It was a total disaster, but we were determined to make it happen.

It’s no surprise that after the first film’s success, a sequel, The Hangover Part II, was quickly made and released two years later. While it was also a financial hit – turning an $80 million investment into $586.8 million – it didn’t receive the same positive reviews as the original. Critics largely disliked it, giving it a 35% rating, and audiences were mixed (52%). A third movie followed, but both critical and audience reception continued to decline, though it still made a profit in theaters.

Currently, The Hangover is number three on the U.S. Netflix chart, following Frankenstein and KPop Demon Hunters. The sequel, The Hangover Part II, is also popular, holding the seventh spot.

Will There Be a Fourth ‘Hangover’ Movie?

Warner Bros. Pictures

It’s been over a decade since The Hangover Part III came out in 2013, and the actors involved have largely shifted their careers. Bradley Cooper, in particular, has moved away from comedy and earned critical praise – including five Oscar nominations – for dramatic roles in films like A Star Is Born, American Sniper, and the 2024 release, Maestro. Despite this, Cooper has stated he’d be open to reuniting with his Hangover co-stars, saying:

Honestly, if I had the chance, I’d jump at it. As you get older, you really understand that the best part of any job is the people you get to work with, and that group was just incredible. We had so much fun making those movies together, and I’d absolutely do it all over again without hesitation.

As a huge movie fan, I’ve always found it interesting how certain films can really define an actor’s career. Bradley Cooper has often talked about how The Hangover was a turning point for him, and it’s easy to see why. All his recent success and award nominations seem to stem from that film. Now, seeing it pop up again on Netflix makes me wonder if it’s finally the right time for another Hangover movie – a belated sequel could be a really smart move.
