A new BBC One drama, Prisoner 951, will soon be available on BBC iPlayer too. It’s based on the incredible true story of Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, and the release date has now been announced.
As a huge drama fan, I’m excited to share that this new series kicks off on BBC One on Sunday, November 23rd at 9pm, and the second episode follows the next day, Monday the 24th, at the same time. Even better, if you can’t wait, the whole season will be available all at once on BBC iPlayer starting Sunday, November 23rd!
Narges Rashidi portrays Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe in this four-episode drama, with Joseph Fiennes playing her husband, Richard Ratcliffe.
Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, who has both British and Iranian citizenship, was held in prison by Iran for six years, essentially as a hostage. Throughout this time, her husband, Richard Ratcliffe, tirelessly fought for her release and to bring her home.
The series was written by Stephen Butchard, who also wrote “This City Is Ours,” and directed by Philippa Lowthorpe, a director who has won three BAFTA awards. It’s based on the upcoming book, “A Yard of Sky,” co-written by Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe and Richard Ratcliffe, which tells their story.

The series tells the story of Nazanin and Richard Ratcliffe, whose case gained international attention. It begins with Nazanin’s arrest at the airport in Tehran and follows her six-year struggle for release and eventual return to the UK.
The story covers both what everyone saw in the news and what happened privately behind the scenes.
This is one of two BBC dramas that Fiennes will be seen starring in in the coming months.
Ralph Fiennes will also star in the television version of ‘Dear England,’ a play by James Graham focusing on Gareth Southgate. He’s playing Southgate again, a role he first performed on stage.
