Sydney Sweeney’s new movie, Christy, which tells the life story of boxing legend Christy Martin, came out in a few US theaters this weekend, but didn’t attract a large audience.
The film didn’t perform well at the box office, earning only $1.3 million in 2011. This meant each cinema only brought in an average of $649.
According to Box Office Mojo, the film’s opening weekend was among the 12 weakest for any movie released in over 2,000 theaters. Although positive word-of-mouth could help it gain traction, reviews have been mixed – it currently has a 67% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
The new film, Christy, featuring Ben Foster, Merritt Wever, and Katy O’Brian, tells the story of Christy Martin (Sweeney), a woman from a small town in West Virginia who unexpectedly found her calling – and a talent – in boxing.

I’m so excited about this story! It follows a woman who’s incredibly driven and determined – she really wants to win, and that pushes her to get into boxing. She’s got a fantastic trainer and manager who eventually becomes her husband, Jim Foster, and he’s really helping her chase her dreams.
Christy Martin appears fierce and strong when she’s boxing, but her biggest challenges happen in her personal life—dealing with family issues, figuring out who she is, and navigating a dangerous relationship that threatens her very survival. This film is based on the incredible true story of Christy Martin, and it’s a powerful tale of strength, bravery, and taking back control of your life.
The film will be released in the UK later this month.
The movie Christy has been released in theaters shortly after a stir caused by an American Eagle ad campaign featuring Sydney Sweeney, whose tagline simply read, “Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans.”
The advertisement featured Sweeney explaining that traits like hair color, personality, and eye color are often inherited from parents. He then jokingly added, “My genes are blue.”
Some people pointed out that the similarity between the words ‘genes’ and ‘jeans’ unintentionally brought to mind the harmful ideas of eugenics and white supremacy.
News outlets also noted that Sweeney is a registered Republican. This prompted a response from President Donald Trump, who said he now liked her advertisement.
I recently read an interview with Sweeney in GQ where she talked about all the buzz around her outfit choices. She said the whole thing was a bit of a shock, but she genuinely loves wearing jeans, which I totally get! It’s nice to hear her just being herself and owning her style.
“All I wear are jeans. I’m literally in jeans and a T-shirt every day of my life.”
