Leonardo DiCaprio Reveals His Favorite Christopher Nolan Movie (& It Isn’t His Own Sci-Fi Masterpiece)

Leonardo DiCaprio is known for his role in Christopher Nolan’s acclaimed film, Inception, a popular sci-fi thriller that established Nolan as a major blockbuster director. Surprisingly, when asked about his favorite Nolan movie, DiCaprio didn’t choose Inception. During a conversation with Benicio del Toro about their new film, One Battle After Another, both actors were asked to name their favorite films by renowned directors. Instead of selecting Inception, they both surprisingly picked a different movie by Nolan.

In a conversation with Collider, Leonardo DiCaprio and Benicio del Toro both revealed that The Dark Knight is their favorite Christopher Nolan film. When the topic turned to Steven Spielberg, Del Toro instantly chose E.T., while DiCaprio needed a moment to decide on Jaws. When asked about Nolan’s work again, Scott Weintraub offered Inception as an option, but DiCaprio immediately repeated his preference for The Dark Knight, and Del Toro concurred.

Finally, they discussed Stanley Kubrick, which both DiCaprio and the interviewer agreed was a difficult choice. DiCaprio mentioned several of Kubrick’s films – including 2001: A Space Odyssey, The Shining, Barry Lyndon, Clockwork Orange, and even Spartacus – making it clear how hard it was to pick just one standout movie. DiCaprio then shared a story about how Christopher Nolan recently obtained an original print of 2001 with the original soundtrack and held a screening for a small group, including himself.

It’s interesting to learn Leonardo DiCaprio considers The Dark Knight Christopher Nolan’s best film, and he has a point. Nolan has directed many excellent movies, including early successes like Memento and The Prestige, and later, Inception starring DiCaprio himself. But The Dark Knight stands out because Nolan elevated the superhero genre, creating a film that was as much a gripping crime thriller as it was a comic book adaptation. It demonstrated that superhero movies could be complex and thought-provoking, going beyond simple entertainment.

It’s often been thought that Leonardo DiCaprio isn’t a fan of superhero films, as he’s never been in one. He even reportedly advised his Don’t Look Up co-star, Timothée Chalamet, to steer clear of both drugs and superhero movies. But that doesn’t necessarily mean DiCaprio dislikes the genre. However, The Dark Knight was truly groundbreaking, fundamentally changing how Hollywood made superhero films. While Warner Bros. and Zack Snyder sometimes misinterpreted Nolan’s approach, The Dark Knight generally inspired filmmakers to elevate the superhero genre.
