How Sydney Sweeney Gained 30 Pounds for Christy With Fast Food Diet

Sydney Sweeney is allowing fans to be voyeurs into her transformation journey.

The actress from Euphoria revealed how she gained around 30 pounds to play boxer Christy Martin in her new film, Christy—and a big part of it involved eating a lot of fast food.

Sydney shared two photos on her Instagram Story on November 10th showing her in different outfits while filming a drama. One photo shows her dressed in a military uniform, and the other shows her in a large blue T-shirt and jeans. In one picture, she’s happily eating a whole pizza, and in the other, she’s enjoying a meal from Chick-Fil-A.

She jokingly wrote on her training photos, acknowledging her struggle to eat enough to fuel her athletic goals: “Trying to get enough calories in, lol.”

For her role in the new film, which premiered on November 7th and also features Ben Foster, Merritt Wever, and Katy M. O’Brian, Sydney didn’t just change her diet to include more carbohydrates. She made other lifestyle adjustments as well.

Sydney, the actress from Anyone But You, posted a video on Instagram showing her quick workouts during breaks on set. In the video, she’s wearing a boxing outfit and brown curly wig – seemingly borrowed from a co-star named Christy – and is doing bicep curls with bright pink 8-pound weights.

Indeed, the 27-year-old adopted a grueling fitness regimen ahead of stepping on set for Christy

In an interview with W magazine published in June, the actress explained that she spent three and a half months preparing to play Christy. This included a rigorous fitness routine: she began by eating more, then spent an hour weightlifting in the morning, two hours kickboxing at midday, and finished with another hour of weightlifting in the evening.

By the end of her 30-pound transformation, Sydney admitted she “didn’t fit in any of my clothes.”

“But it was amazing,” she clarified. “I was so strong, like crazy strong.”

Sydney Sweeney debuted a darker hair color while filming her new movie in North Carolina. She’ll be playing Christy Martin, a famous boxer and Hall of Famer, in the currently unnamed film. The movie will also depict Martin’s marriage to her former boxing coach, James Martin.

For the part, Sydney changed her look, swapping her usual blonde hair for a short, brown hairstyle tied back with a dark blue bandana. She completed the outfit with an oversized, dark blue zip-up sweatshirt, a tan T-shirt, dark sweatpants, and white sneakers.

The 27-year-old then changed into loose-fitting, gray sweat shorts that went to their knees, and a light blue t-shirt, dressing the part of Christy while filming.

Ben Foster, who acted alongside Sydney in the film, also changed his appearance drastically for the role of James. Usually sporting a beard, Foster arrived on set clean-shaven and wearing a blonde wig. He completed his look with a light blue polo shirt, navy sweatpants, and a brown duffel bag.

From the back, Sydney entered the set wearing different workout clothes. She had on loose-fitting maroon shorts and a blue and white windbreaker.

Ben, who has two children with his wife, actress Laura Prepon of That ’70s Show, wore a yellow and white striped polo shirt and navy sweatpants to play the character James.

In a March 2024 interview with The Los Angeles Times, Sydney described herself as someone who likes to be actively involved in projects. She enjoys contributing ideas, working with others to find solutions, and generally taking an active role. She explained that it’s difficult for her to be on a film set and not be able to contribute, and that having her voice heard and her opinions valued is very important to her.

The actress, known for her role in The White Lotus, embraces a busy work life and is always excited about upcoming projects.

In a 2023 interview with Women’s Health, she shared that she admires her future self. She explained that as a child, she looked forward to becoming 25, and now she strives to be the person she imagines she’ll be at 50, hoping to make choices that woman would approve of.
