Excitement for the last season of Stranger Things is incredibly high. Fans are eager to see the final showdown between Eleven and her friends and the villain, Vecna. But before the story can move forward, a few unanswered questions need to be addressed, especially surrounding Vecna and his history with the Upside Down. The show creators are intentionally holding back some details to keep the ending a surprise when the final episodes are released around the New Year.
Although Netflix is being secretive about the new season, they’ve given fans a sneak peek! The first five minutes of Stranger Things Season 5 have been released, and it takes us back to the beginning – when Will Byers was struggling to survive in the Upside Down. Here are five questions that this opening scene raises about the final season.
5) Does Will Have Powers?

The fifth season of Stranger Things begins with Will sheltering in his fort, attempting to stay composed as strange creatures lurk nearby. However, this flashback is different from the others: it shows Will actually leaving his fort and encountering a Demogorgon, which then captures him and brings him to Vecna.
Vecna seems pleased to see Will because he has a specific use for him in his plan, and forcibly inserts a tube into his mouth. It’s unclear exactly what this does to Will, but many believe it’s granting him some kind of power. The show’s final season needs to explain whether this is true, and if so, give Will the opportunity to demonstrate those abilities.
4) Why Did Vecna Let Barb Die?

Initially, Stranger Things presented the Demogorgon as a lone, dangerous creature from another dimension, simply focused on killing. But a recent clip from Season 5 reveals the Demogorgon isn’t acting alone – it’s actually under Vecna’s control.
If the Demogorgon is working for Vecna, it seems Vecna specifically targeted Barb, as she tragically died in Season 1 after being attacked at a party. It’s strange that Vecna wouldn’t have found a way to use her, so there must be a reason for her death.
3) How Does the Mind Flayer Fit Into the Story?

After the Demogorgon is defeated, a massive, spider-like creature made of smoke appears in Hawkins. This new threat is even more powerful, taking control of people and turning them into mind-controlled puppets. The group realizes the only way to win is to cut off the connection between the human world and the terrifying alternate dimension known as the Upside Down.
It’s been revealed that Vecna is responsible for creating the Mind Flayer and its hive mind in the Upside Down, but where the Mind Flayer gets its power remains unknown. Interestingly, the Mind Flayer existed for a period of time before Vecna, and the show needs to explain what that means.
2) Why Did Vecna Want Will?

The new trailer for Stranger Things Season 5 revealed a major clue: Vecna appears to be focusing on Will Byers. When Will was brought to Vecna by the Demogorgon, Vecna called him by his birth name, “William,” even though they’d never met before.
Vecna likely had a specific reason for sending the Demogorgon after Will, and it’s possible that letting Will return from the Upside Down was intentional. Hopefully, Vecna will soon reveal his motives to everyone.
1) Does Will Still Work for Vecna?

Even in a short scene from Season 5, Will faces a lot of hardship – he struggles with climbing, falls from trees, and has a terrifying encounter with Vecna. And things don’t get any easier for him when he returns to Hawkins; it seems like he constantly faces new challenges. He really can’t catch a break.
It doesn’t seem like much will change in the final season. Vecna’s comments suggest he’s still targeting Will, and there’s a chance Will is unknowingly working for him. Will’s friends will need to support him one last time if he’s ever going to find lasting peace.
Stranger Things Season 5 starts streaming on Netflix on November 26, 2025.
