Part Three.
Villeneuve has repeatedly emphasized in interviews that Dune: Part Three is essential for realizing Herbert’s original vision, as it portrays Paul’s journey as a warning tale. The second novel was penned to challenge audience assumptions, investigating the tragic outcomes of messianic figures and the corrupting effects of unchecked political and religious authority. This thematic exploration hints that the movie will adopt a darker tone compared to its predecessors, focusing on the grim aspects of the empire Paul established.
In Frank Herbert’s “Dune Messiah,” the narrative unfolds as a grim sequel to the initial book’s legendary tale. The story leaps ahead by 12 years into Paul’s tenure as Emperor, during which his Fremen armies are responsible for the deaths of billions across the cosmos. The novel revolves around a plot to depose Paul, masterminded by a secret alliance involving the Spacing Guild, the Bene Gesserit, and the Tleilaxu. These powerful factions perceive that the religious zeal Paul instills in his subjects poses a threat to all.
Who’s Confirmed to Return in Dune: Part Three?
In the continuation of a tale that extends over a decade and introduces the upcoming Atreides dynasty, the cast for Dune: Part Three is planned to include both familiar faces and pivotal newcomers. Timothée Chalamet will lead the film as the troubled Emperor Paul, with Zendaya set to reappear as Chani, whose sad destiny plays a crucial role in the narrative’s resolution. Florence Pugh’s character, Princess Irulan, is anticipated to have an expanded role, as she becomes a significant figure in a plot against her spouse. Lastly, Rebecca Ferguson is expected to return as Lady Jessica, the influential Bene Gesserit who sets many of the story’s events in motion.
The ensemble in the sequel includes several eagerly awaited characters, with Jason Momoa set to reprise his role as Duncan Idaho, now portraying the resurrected ghola Hayt – a man with his former mentor’s face but no recollection of his past, tasked with destroying Paul. After her captivating secret appearance in Part Two, Anya Taylor-Joy is set to assume the complete role of Paul’s potent and perilously self-aware sister, who eventually becomes the regent of the empire. Furthermore, young actors have been selected for the critical roles of Paul and Chani’s twin offspring. Nakoa-Wolf Momoa will embody Leto II Atreides, with Ida Brooke set to play his sister, Ghanima Atreides. These twins are “pre-born,” inheriting the ancestral memories of countless ancestors before they are born. Their casting beyond infancy hints that the film might delve into the early occurrences of Herbert’s third book, Children of Dune. Lastly, there are rumors swirling that Robert Pattinson may join the cast as the Face Dancer Scytale from the Tleilaxu.
Dune: Part Three is currently in development and will hit theaters on December 18, 2026.
