Percy Jackson Season 2 Trailer’s New Characters, Explained

The popular series is back for a second season, starting December 10th on Disney+. The new season, based on Rick Riordan’s Sea of Monsters, follows Percy Jackson and his friends on a risky quest to save Grover and find the Golden Fleece.

The recently released trailer for Season 2 confirms the return of fan favorites like Percy Jackson, Annabeth Chase, Grover Underwood, and others. It also introduces several new, important characters who will play a big role in the story. To fully enjoy Season 2 when it arrives next month, it’s helpful to know a little about these new faces beforehand.

Tyson Shakes Up Percy Jackson’s Life

Tyson, a Cyclops played by Daniel Diemer, is a key new character introduced in Sea of Monsters. He arrives at Camp Half-Blood and is later revealed to be another son of Poseidon, making him Percy’s half-brother. Initially hesitant, Percy eventually learns to accept and appreciate Tyson as a new member of his family.

I’m so excited to see Tyson join Percy and Annabeth on their quest across the Sea of Monsters! It’s amazing how he’s stepping up to help rescue Grover from that Cyclops, Polyphemus. Okay, so Tyson’s not exactly a natural hero – he definitely struggles at first. But it’s awesome watching him learn and grow, especially with Percy helping him out. It’s a really cool journey seeing him find his own strengths.

Thalia Grace Has an Important History Tied to Camp Half-Blood

Thalia Grace plays an important role in the Percy Jackson series. Actress Tamara Smart portrays her as the daughter of Zeus, the king of the gods. Like Percy Jackson, she’s considered a ‘forbidden child’ because Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades had promised not to have any more children with humans. Years before the events of The Lightning Thief, Thalia suffered for her father’s actions. While traveling to Camp Half-Blood with Luke Castellan and Annabeth Chase, she bravely fought off a group of monsters, sacrificing herself to protect them. As a final act of kindness, Zeus turned her into a tree at the camp’s border. This tree created a powerful barrier, preventing monsters from entering as long as it remained standing.

At the start of Season 2, Luke Castellan damages Thalia’s tree with poison, causing it to slowly die. To keep Camp Half-Blood safe, Percy Jackson and his friends must find the legendary Golden Fleece, which is the only thing that can heal the tree. We’ll also see Thalia in flashbacks this season, learning more about her brave sacrifice and how it affects the story.

Polyphemus Is an Ancient Greek Monster

Polyphemus is a major character in the world of Percy Jackson, and he’s well-known from the classic story The Odyssey. In Homer’s tale, Odysseus and his crew find themselves stuck on the island of a Cyclops named Polyphemus, who traps and eats his guests. Odysseus cleverly blinds Polyphemus and manages to escape with his men, but this comes at a cost. Polyphemus is the son of Poseidon, the sea god, and his anger creates further challenges for Odysseus on his journey home to Ithaca.

The new series, Percy Jackson & the Olympians, revisits the story of Polyphemus, the Cyclops from Greek mythology, years after his famous encounter with Odysseus. This time, he’s stolen the Golden Fleece and kidnapped Grover Underwood, a satyr. Throughout Season 2, Percy, Annabeth, and Tyson will embark on a dangerous mission to infiltrate Polyphemus’s island, retrieve the Fleece, and rescue their friend. While the trailer only offers a brief glimpse, audiences can expect a full reveal of the character when he appears in the show. Aleks Paunovic, recently seen in Disney+’s Hawkeye, will portray Polyphemus. He is also slated to appear in

Circe Is an Intriguing New Villain

The new trailer for Percy Jackson briefly features Circe, a villain who will challenge the demigods. Circe is a sorceress known from the story of Odysseus – just like Polyphemus, Odysseus meets her during his journey home to Ithaca. She lives on the island of Aeaea, where she turns Odysseus’s crew into pigs. Ultimately, though, she falls in love with Odysseus, and he manages to free his men and escape.

Rick Riordan’s Sea of Monsters puts a funny spin on the classic tale of Circe. Instead of turning men into pigs, she transforms them into guinea pigs! In the story, Percy Jackson, Annabeth Chase, and Tyson have to cleverly outsmart her to continue their adventure. Actress Rosemarie DeWitt will play Circe in the second season of Percy Jackson & the Olympians. Interestingly, Charlize Theron will portray the same character in Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film, The Odyssey.

The Grey Sisters are a Fun Addition to the Lore of Percy Jackson

In Season 2 of their journey, Percy, Annabeth, and Tyson meet a variety of interesting characters, some of whom are actually helpful. One memorable group is the Grey Sisters, who operate a magical taxi in New York City. These three sisters share just one eye and one tooth between them, causing constant arguments. They’re the daughters of minor sea gods, Keto and Phorcys, and they don’t trust demigods because the original Perseus once stole their eye.

In Percy Jackson & the Olympians, Sandra Bernhard appears as Anger, a cab driver responsible for collecting fares. Kristen Schaal plays Tempest, who has the biggest role in the trailer and playfully teases Annabeth and Percy about a possible romance. Margaret Cho plays Wasp, the driver focused on getting passengers where they need to go safely and on schedule.

Tantalus Sends the Heroes on Their Way

The latest character revealed in the Season 2 trailer for Percy Jackson & the Olympians is Tantalus. In Greek mythology, Tantalus was a demigod punished for stealing food and drink of the gods, and he reappears in Sea of Monsters. In Season 2, he works at Camp Half-Blood as an activities director, reporting to the camp director, Mr. D (Dionysus).

The latest trailer reveals Tantalus assigning the demigods their next quest, emphasizing that the camp’s future depends on them. Timothy Simmons, recognizable from his role as Jonah Ryan in Veep and currently starring in Kristen Bell’s show Nobody Wants This, will play Tantalus in the series.

Other Characters Coming in Percy Jackson & the Olympians Season 2

The upcoming season of Percy Jackson & the Olympians will feature several new characters not seen in the first trailer. Andra Day will play Athena, the goddess of wisdom and strategy, who is Annabeth Chase’s mother and a key figure in the series. Courtney B. Vance will also join the cast as Zeus, taking over the role from Lance Reddick, who sadly passed away after filming his scenes in Season 1.

Good news for fans of Percy Jackson & the Olympians! Casting for Season 3, which will cover The Titan’s Curse, is already underway. Levi Christopulos and Olive Abercrombie will play Nico and Bianca di Angelo. Additionally, Dafne Keen, known for her role in Logan, has been cast as Artemis, the huntress, and another actress will portray Aphrodite, the goddess of love.
