The full reviews for Superman are in, and it’s looking good for the iconic DC character.
So far, the majority of the reviews that have been released have been quite favorable, with the movie currently having an 86% rating on Rotten Tomatoes‘ Tomatometer, which is based on a total of 151 reviews.
86% of the reviews from critics have been generally favorable or very positive about the movie, with several providing praiseworthy comments.
The Independent’s review stated that the script cleverly takes advantage of the genre as a broad canvas for exploring big ideas. On the other hand, The Telegraph’s review praised Gunn’s straightforward approach within this genre, which it found to be genuinely generous and passionate about the characters.

As a movie critic, I must say that James Gunn’s new DCU is off to an impressive start. The storyline promises to carry on intriguingly with the second season of Peacemaker airing later this year, followed closely by Lanterns in early 2023. Excitingly, Supergirl and Clayface are slated for release on the big screen in 2026, marking the next significant installments of this universe.
Currently, the Rotten Tomatoes rating for Superman’s movie ranks among the top for films centered around this iconic character.
It is tied with 1978’s Superman: The Movie, and just below Superman II, which is on 88 per cent.
In comparison, Superman Returns earned a 72% rating, whereas movies like Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice received poor ratings, labeled as ‘rotten’.
Recently, Gunn forecasted that certain viewers might perceive the movie’s theme of “human kindness” as an “insult,” sharing this perspective with The Sunday Times, stating that the film is essentially a narrative about “America.
He mentioned: “A person who moved here from elsewhere and contributed to the nation’s settlement. To me, this tale underscores the importance of fundamental human compassion, a quality we seem to have forgotten in today’s world.
Gunn added: “It’s all about humanity showing compassion, and yes, there may be individuals who lack this quality and find the concept of kindness off-putting. However, I couldn’t care less about them.
