Dota 2 is having an unexpected crossover event with Monster Hunter, and players can get free cosmetic items as part of it.
Dota 2 doesn’t usually feature events based on other games, but Valve has surprised players by partnering with Capcom to add content from Monster Hunter. Just after the recent Quartero’s Curios event ended on November 5th, players were hoping for something new to do. Since neither the popular Diretide nor Frostivus events are happening this year, the Monster Hunter crossover is a particularly welcome surprise.
Dota 2 x Monster Hunter: An unlikely collaboration

Dota 2 has occasionally featured small nods to other games and franchises, usually through voice packs inspired by things like Portal and Rick and Morty. Now, a new event is starting that goes further, offering players a comic, new character skins, and collectible couriers. When players launch the game, they’ll first see an introduction to the Dota 2 and Monster Hunter collaboration.

After that, I got to check out a comic starring Axe and his scribe, Goodkind. It’s a really cool crossover between Dota 2 and Monster Hunter! Axe basically just brags about all the monsters he’s killing, while Goodkind tries to figure out exactly how powerful every Dota hero is. That then leads into something called the Hero Atlas, which is like a progress tracker with a bunch of background story stuff in it.

This event includes six unique cosmetic sets for Dota 2 heroes, inspired by Monster Hunter. Each set comes in three different color variations. Players can create these sets by playing matches, collecting materials, and completing challenges—all of which are based on Monster Hunter gameplay. You don’t need to play Monster Hunter, just continue playing Dota 2 to earn the necessary materials.
A courier and a new pet
Once the event starts, players can immediately craft a Palico Courier. But that’s not the only new companion! There’s also the Poogie. These pets, called “Effigy Pets,” stay in your base near your Effigy and will follow you when you return to the fountain. If monsters attack, the Poogie will run and hide. You can collect six different kinds of Poogies, and there are also some color options for the Palico Courier.

Hero cosmetics
Like all events, the coolest part is definitely the new character outfits. Monster Hunter is famous for its incredible designs, and now some of those are available in Dota 2. Dragon Knight, Windranger, Techies, Anti-Mage, Beast Master, and Sniper are getting new sets. Each set includes a main design, plus three different color options for players to unlock.
- Anti-Mage (Wei) – Kirin Armor
The Wei Persona for Anti-Mage now features a stunning design inspired by the Monster Hunter Kirin Armor set. The ‘Prismatic’ color scheme even seems to include a nod to the popular game Robot Unicorn Attack.

- Sniper – Odogaron Armor

- Beastmaster – Bone Armor

- Techies – Palico Disguise Bomb Unit

- Windranger – Zinogre Armor

- Dragon Knight – Rathalos Armor
It was only natural for Dragon Knight to appear in a Dota 2 event celebrating Monster Hunter, and true to form, his Dragon Form transforms him into Rathalos.
If you loved seeing the Dragon Knight transform into a dragon and wished it could be a Rathalos, you’ll be happy to hear Capcom felt the same way – they were thrilled to make it happen!
Valve on the crossover event via

Players have the option to spend money to get even more content. The Expedition Pack includes lots of new items, a Poogie companion, and a Rathalos Form for Donkey Kong. Here’s what you’ll get by purchasing the pack:
- Poogie
- Rathalos Form
- Bullfang (Beastmaster Boar)
- MH Music Pack
- MH Spray Pack
- Materials for six hero core cosmetics

Dreaming of Frostivus
The recent collaboration between Dota 2 and Monster Hunter is a pleasant surprise. It’s frustrating that we haven’t had Diretide for a year, so we’re hoping this new event doesn’t mean the end of Frostivus too. With over a month before the usual Dota 2 holiday event, we’re keeping our fingers crossed that Valve continues to host at least one yearly festive event.
This new partnership is a great example of how Dota 2 can team up with unexpected sources to create amazing cosmetic items – and we’re hoping for some fun in-game events too! Now, let’s start playing to unlock the special ‘Unicorn Rainbow’ color for Anti-Mage’s Kirin Armor.
