The concept of the Sith Rule of Two was first introduced in Star Wars 26 years ago. While Darth Vader was called the “Dark Lord of the Sith” in the book version of A New Hope, the Sith themselves weren’t actually seen in the original Star Wars trilogy. They finally appeared on screen in The Phantom Menace in 1999, but remained mysterious figures.
In The Phantom Menace, the concept of the “Sith Rule of Two” was introduced. This rule, created by Darth Bane, stated that there should only ever be two Sith Lords: a master to guide and an apprentice to learn and pursue power. The prequel films showed Palpatine readily discarding apprentices – first Darth Maul, then Count Dooku, even sacrificing them to manipulate Anakin Skywalker. Now, after 26 years, Star Wars has finally explained the real purpose behind this ancient rule.
The Apprentice is the Key to the Master’s Power

In Adam Christopher’s new novel, “Master of Evil,” Darth Vader continues his journey shortly after the events of Revenge of the Sith. Driven by his desire to bring back Padmé, he searches for a powerful dark side anomaly. A key moment in the book reveals a surprising Force vision that completely changes what fans thought they knew about the Sith’s history and the Rule of Two.
The dark side holds a genuine power, but it’s meant to be kept hidden. Its knowledge should be collected and guarded, used only for personal gain. That’s the natural order of things. A master’s strength actually comes from the anger and fear of their student. The master takes that negative energy, amplifies it, and uses it to increase their own power and control over the dark side. Ultimately, it’s the student who enables the master’s power, not the other way around.
It’s always seemed strange that a Sith Lord would risk training someone to take their place. But as explained in Master of Evil, there’s a specific reason: the relationship between a Sith Lord and their apprentice is the opposite of the one between a Jedi Master and Padawan. A Sith Lord actually gains power from the negativity of their apprentice. The more an apprentice hates their master, and the more they crave their power while also fearing it, the stronger the Sith Lord becomes.
Now We Know Why Palpatine Really Wanted The Chosen One

This new information dramatically changes how we understand the Star Wars prequels. Previously, it was thought that Palpatine only used his apprentices, like pawns, and was interested in Anakin Skywalker as a potential vessel to transfer his consciousness into. However, recent revelations show that Palpatine desired the Chosen One because Anakin was the most powerful apprentice he could find – and training him would make Palpatine even more powerful. Essentially, Palpatine’s manipulation of Anakin wasn’t just about control, but about increasing his own power.
In Revenge of the Sith, Palpatine gambles on revealing his true identity to Anakin. This nearly failed when the Jedi tried to arrest him, and he appeared less powerful fighting Mace Windu than he did later against Yoda. The reason for this power difference is now clear: Palpatine didn’t have an apprentice when he fought Windu, but by the time he battled Yoda, Anakin had already become Darth Vader. Having the Chosen One as his apprentice made Palpatine virtually unstoppable.
Taking on an apprentice is always a gamble, as Palpatine understood. While he prepared extensively for his own death, those preparations actually suggest he didn’t want Darth Vader to take over his empire. However, Palpatine still needed Vader’s ambition, using his anger and hatred to strengthen his own power. Being a Sith Lord is a delicate balancing act: you need an ambitious apprentice, but fostering that ambition always carries the risk of being overthrown.
This helps explain why Palpatine appeared so weak in The Rise of Skywalker. The most powerful Sith Lord ever was so diminished that he wouldn’t train an apprentice, cutting himself off from a major source of strength. Ultimately, abandoning the Rule of Two proved disastrous for the entire Sith Order, as it ended the lineage established by Darth Bane.
