Avengers: Doomsday Is Reportedly Giving One Kang Idea to Doctor Doom (& It’ll Be Divisive)

The upcoming Avengers movie, currently titled ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ is apparently using a key concept originally planned for Kang the Conqueror and applying it to Doctor Doom as the main villain. This represents a significant shift in direction for Marvel’s Multiverse Saga, swapping Jonathan Majors’ Kang for Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom. While Marvel and Disney ended their relationship with Majors following his conviction in December 2023 for assaulting his former girlfriend, the disappointing box office results of ‘Ant-Man & the Wasp: Quantumania’ likely signaled this change was coming.

Despite recent changes, Marvel appears to be continuing with concepts originally associated with Kang the Conqueror. According to insider Daniel Richtman, the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday will include multiple versions of Doctor Doom from different universes. This is similar to the “Council of Kangs” seen in Quantumania, but with a possible twist. While Jonathan Majors played all the various Kang characters, it’s unclear if Robert Downey Jr. will portray every version of Doom. Reports suggest that female versions of Doom will be played by other actors as well.

Doctor Doom’s Variants Raise Massive Questions for the MCU

Interestingly, this storyline draws inspiration from the Kang the Conqueror character, but also cleverly flips a concept from the Fantastic Four comics. In those comics, Reed Richards (Mr. Fantastic) teamed up with versions of himself from different universes to form the “Council of Reeds,” all aiming to better their worlds. Given Doctor Doom’s constant desire to surpass Reed and prove his superiority, it’s ironic and quite fitting to see this Fantastic Four idea applied to Doom instead.

A curious point arises regarding the post-credits scene in Fantastic Four: First Steps. While it marked Doctor Doom’s first appearance in the MCU and hinted at his interest in Franklin Richards, it’s unclear if this was the primary version of Doom we’ll see as a major villain in Avengers: Doomsday, or an alternate version with different motives. Given Doctor Doom’s famously large ego in the comics, it seems unlikely that a ‘Council of Dooms’ would involve genuinely working together.

If Robert Downey Jr. is playing different versions of Doctor Doom, it suggests his Iron Man character, Tony Stark, might have been a version of Doom all along – or would have become one if he hadn’t died. This could mean Iron Man and Doctor Doom are essentially the same person across the multiverse, which would be a major and likely debated change to the story. We’ll have to wait and see if these reports are true and how Marvel plans to address them.
