10 Harsh Realities Of Rewatching Avengers: Infinity War on Disney+

Now that all the Marvel movies are available on Disney+, fans have an easy way to revisit their favorite superhero adventures. That includes re-watching one of the MCU’s best films, which kicked off the fight against Thanos and ultimately led to the huge conclusion of the Infinity Saga in Avengers: Endgame.

Seven years after its release, fans revisiting Infinity War have pointed out some frustrating flaws in the Avengers’ decisions. While viewers recognize the extreme difficulty of the situation, it’s still disappointing to see the team make so many critical errors that led to disastrous results.

In Retrospect, It’s Particularly Hard To See Wanda Losing Vision

Wanda Maximoff experienced a great deal of loss throughout her life. As a child, she lost both of her parents, and later, her brother died during the Battle of Sokovia. She eventually found love with Vision, only to lose him when Thanos attacked. Five years after the devastating event known as the Snap, she returned to a world where she felt completely alone.

Wanda creates a reality where she lives in a perfect sitcom-like town with Vision as her husband and two children, Billy and Tommy. However, when she breaks the illusion, Billy and Tommy disappear, which is especially painful to watch knowing everything Wanda went through. This also makes rewatching Infinity War more heartbreaking, as viewers have grown to care for Vision and Wanda’s relationship.

Loki’s Death Was Anti-Climactic

The movie Infinity War opens with Thanos attacking the Asgardian spaceship, which was carrying survivors from their destroyed home planet. He was after the Tesseract, and Loki had previously taken it from Asgard. Loki handed the Tesseract – containing the Space Stone – to Thanos to save Thor, but then attempted to attack Thanos anyway.

Loki acted like he was pledging allegiance to Thanos, but secretly prepared to attack him with a knife. Thanos anticipated the betrayal and stopped him, ultimately killing Loki. While Loki later finds redemption for his actions, his death happens very early in the movie and feels premature for such a compelling character. Although a different version of Loki becomes important later in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it doesn’t quite feel like the same character getting the closure he deserved.

Doctor Strange Should Have Destroyed The Time Stone

Honestly, one thing that always bothered me about the Infinity War storyline is that Doctor Strange could have destroyed the Time Stone, but he didn’t. I get it, the Stone was super important to the Masters of the Mystic Arts, and he was supposed to protect it in the Eye of Agamotto. But when you’re facing a threat like Thanos, who was basically trying to wipe out everything, wouldn’t sacrificing the Stone have been the right move? It just feels like he could have done more to stop things.

Ultimately, Doctor Strange had no choice but to give Thanos the Time Stone, which Thanos then used to obtain Vision’s Mind Stone and complete the Infinity Stone collection. While this seemed like a sacrifice, it was Strange’s only path to eventually defeating Thanos. However, the suffering could have been avoided if Strange had simply destroyed the Stone or gone into hiding with it.

There Are Too Many Cheesy Jokes That Break The Tension Of The Film

Along with Endgame, this is arguably Marvel’s biggest team-up movie yet. Infinity War really ramps up the danger, with superheroes facing death and the entire universe at risk. While Marvel is usually funny, some of the jokes in this film feel out of place.

Okay, so there’s this really intense scene with Gamora and Star-Lord. She basically makes him promise to kill her if Thanos ever gets ahold of her, and they share this really emotional kiss. But then, total mood killer – it turns out Drax was right there the whole time! And then, get this, he tries to prove he can turn invisible by moving super slowly. It completely wrecked the moment, which was already huge because, you know, Gamora… well, she doesn’t make it. It just took all the weight out of it.

Thanos Grooming Gamora Is Too Disturbing To Re-Watch

Gamora’s story in Infinity War is particularly heartbreaking. The film reveals Thanos adopted her after wiping out half of her home planet. He was impressed by her fighting skills and, instead of killing her, took her with him. It’s deeply disturbing how gently he speaks to her while simultaneously destroying her family and world.

Adding to his villainy, Thanos was a deeply flawed father. He relentlessly pushed Gamora and Nebula to become powerful fighters, often by forcing them to compete against each other. Ultimately, he sacrificed Gamora for the Soul Stone, a final, devastating act following years of mistreatment and abuse.

Peter Quill Makes The Most Unforgivable Mistake

Star-Lord, Drax, Mantis, Iron Man, Doctor Strange, and Spider-Man had a prime chance to beat Thanos. They planned an ambush, waiting for him on his home planet. They bombarded him with attacks and used Mantis’s powers to briefly stun him and remove his powerful gauntlet. However, Quill unexpectedly learned that Thanos had killed Gamora, and in a fit of rage, he began attacking Thanos. This broke Mantis’s concentration, allowing Thanos to recover and ultimately defeat the combined forces of the Guardians of the Galaxy and the Avengers.

Okay, so I get it, Star-Lord was totally devastated and angry, but man, he really let his feelings take over at the worst possible time. He messed up big time and ended up betraying everyone – his friends, the whole team, even Gamora! She literally asked him to finish her off to stop Thanos, but he was so caught up in his own head he couldn’t see how huge the stakes were. The entire universe was on the line, and he just… didn’t get it.

Gamora Practically Delivered The Stone To Her Father

After discovering Thanos’s dangerous scheme, Gamora immediately confronts him. She joins Star-Lord and the team on a trip to Knowhere, hoping to prevent Thanos from obtaining the Aether from the Collector. However, their attempt fails, and Thanos uses the situation to capture Gamora.

Gamora possessed vital knowledge about the Soul Stone’s location, information Thanos needed to carry out his devastating plan. Knowing this, she asked Peter to kill her if she was ever captured. Despite wanting to do the right thing, Gamora should have stayed far away from Thanos. Instead, she revealed the location of Vormir to him and ultimately sacrificed herself to obtain the Soul Stone, fulfilling his plan.

Thor Utterly Failed

Like many others, Thor had an opportunity to defeat Thanos but ultimately fell short. It’s especially disappointing considering the extreme lengths he went to in order to create a weapon capable of challenging Thanos – the Stormbreaker. He risked his life traveling to Nidavellir and reigniting its dying star, all so the dwarf Eitri could forge the powerful weapon.

Ultimately, that whole storyline feels unnecessary when you watch the movie again. Thor caught Thanos off guard, but his hit wasn’t powerful enough to really damage him – it looks like Thor should have aimed for the head.

No One Sees Wanda’s Sacrifice

Okay, so watching Infinity War was brutal! The whole time, everyone was debating whether to destroy the Mind Stone, but it meant killing Vision, which was awful to think about. Then, when things were looking completely hopeless, Vision actually asked Wanda to do it. It was heartbreaking, but she did, trying to buy some time to save him while also stopping Thanos. And his last words? “I love you.” Seriously, I was a mess!

Thanos uses the Time Stone to bring Vision back to life, only to immediately kill him again to take the Mind Stone. Because Wanda was killed during the Snap, no one remembers her witnessing Vision’s death – not once, but twice. This explains why Wanda was so deeply grieving in WandaVision; she was the only one who knew the full extent of her loss, having watched Vision die repeatedly.

Spider-Man and Iron Man See Each Other Die

In one scene, Peter Parker tragically dies in Tony Stark’s arms following the Snap. He desperately pleads not to disappear, but crumbles to dust, leaving Tony helpless. Five years later, the situation is flipped – Tony is the one who dies in Peter’s arms.

Okay, so rewatching Infinity War now is totally different because we know what happens in Endgame. Seeing Peter and Tony share that little moment before Tony… well, before he sacrifices himself is way harder now. It’s just brutal knowing there’s no chance for them to have a peaceful life together after that. It really hits different knowing what’s coming, and makes Infinity War a much tougher watch.
