Ten years ago, Marvel said goodbye to Wolverine, a character who, like all iconic superheroes, left a lasting mark. While Logan might not have seen himself as a legend, his influence is undeniable. He’s been part of numerous superhero teams, saved the world repeatedly, and did it all while battling his own inner demons. A decade ago, Marvel surprised fans by temporarily ending Wolverine’s story, using it as an opportunity to examine his impact and remember his adventures.
The first issue of All-New Wolverine, released on November 11, 2016, by Tom Taylor, David López, and David Navarrot, began the story of who would take over as Wolverine. Following a significant event where those closest to Wolverine debated his future, one person clearly stood out as his successor.
Laura Kinney (X-23) is the Best New Wolverine
Laura Kinney, known as X-23, took over the mantle of Wolverine. As a female clone of Logan, her life followed a similar path: she was raised to be an assassin and initially felt devoid of emotion. It took years for her to embrace her humanity, and Logan was instrumental in helping her see her own worth. He saw her as a daughter, emphasizing her dignity and value, and even disagreed with Cyclops when he wanted to exploit her skills as a weapon within X-Force.
Laura took on the name Wolverine as a tribute to the man she considered her father, a decision supported by Tony Stark after he learned she was artificially created – essentially making her his daughter. More importantly, adopting the name allowed her to leave behind “X-23.” While often considered her codename, X-23 was actually a designation given to her by her creators, a label she felt was dehumanizing. By becoming Wolverine, Laura definitively rejected that past and reclaimed her identity.
The All-New Wolverine Hasn’t (Quite) Stuck
It shouldn’t be surprising that Logan eventually returned. Since then, Marvel has had a hard time deciding how to portray Laura – sometimes as a continuation of Wolverine, and other times still as her original identity, X-23. Currently, Marvel’s comics are oddly positioning her as the new Sabretooth, which doesn’t quite fit her character. However, she remains the most natural successor to Wolverine, because it’s a fitting conclusion to her story, showing her finally becoming the daughter Logan always intended.
It’s hard to believe it’s been ten years since this incredible story, written by Tom Taylor – the same writer who’s now creating a crossover event featuring the All-New Wolverine and DC’s Nightwing. This team-up between Marvel and DC promises to be a truly memorable comic, bringing together the worlds of Batman and Wolverine.
