There’s Only One Way to Save the X-Men and the Avengers (& No One Will Guess It)

Things aren’t going well for Marvel’s flagship teams. The recent reboot of Avengers in 2023 was a flop, failing to gain traction despite trying to appeal to fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While the X-Men’s 2024 reboot started strong, it hasn’t maintained that momentum. Only the Fantastic Four seem to be thriving, leaving two of Marvel’s historically best-selling teams struggling to find their footing.

Marvel has been struggling to generate excitement for the Avengers and X-Men recently. While they’ve announced Brian Michael Bendis’s return for a brief Avengers story and previewed the next chapter of the X-Men’s adventures following the Krakoa era at New York Comic Con, these efforts haven’t really addressed the core issues. Marvel needs a way to reignite interest in both teams, and I believe bringing back the Avengers Unity Squad – the Uncanny Avengers – is the answer.

Uncanny Avengers Was the Perfect Avengers/X-Men Crossover

The Avengers vs. X-Men event addressed a long-standing concern among X-Men fans: the Avengers often prioritized protecting humanity as a whole while overlooking the needs and safety of mutants. The Avengers frequently worked alongside those who actively harmed mutants, like the creators of Sentinel robots and supporters of anti-mutant legislation, without voicing opposition. As a result, Uncanny Avengers (Vol. 1) was launched. Captain America formed the Avengers Unity Squad, a team designed to bridge the gap between Avengers and mutants, bringing them together for the first time.

The first volume of Uncanny Avengers delivered some of the most memorable Avengers stories of the 2010s, featuring conflicts with villains like Red Skull (who became Red Onslaught) and the Apocalypse Twins. The 24-issue run was fantastic, skillfully building a team of heroes – both human and mutant – who often disagreed but ultimately united. While the series eventually lost its momentum with each new iteration, straying from its original concept, the prospect of its return is still exciting.

Honestly, Marvel’s X-Men and Avengers comics haven’t been very exciting recently. The recent X-Men relaunch seemed to focus only on simplifying the story to fit the movies, and the Avengers comic lost direction when plans for its storyline changed. Both teams could really use a boost, and bringing back the idea of an Avengers Unity Squad – a team bringing together different heroes – might be just the thing to revitalize them.

The idea for this team came about during a period of conflict between the Avengers and the X-Men, when superhero battles were common. Bringing these two groups together would symbolize a move past old grudges, showing mutants and Avengers cooperating for a better future. A new team featuring popular characters from both sides could attract fans of both comics and potentially become Marvel’s leading title. Both the X-Men and the Avengers have recently struggled to find fresh direction – the X-Men’s teams feel repetitive, and the Avengers haven’t been able to fully capture the attention of fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. A revamped Uncanny Avengers series, with a top-notch creative team, could be the solution.

Uncanny Avengers Is the Perfect Flagship Book for Modern Marvel

For the past three decades, Marvel’s popularity soared thanks to the success of the Avengers and the X-Men, both in comic books and movies. However, these two iconic teams aren’t performing as well lately. It feels like Marvel is pausing, largely due to the lack of a clear plan for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and this is impacting both groups. A major shake-up is needed, and relaunching Uncanny Avengers feels like the ideal way to begin.

As a huge comic book fan, I’ve always loved team-up books. There’s something awesome about seeing all your favorite heroes – like the X-Men and the Avengers – fighting alongside each other. Usually, Marvel saves those big crossovers for huge event comics. But this new Uncanny Avengers idea? It’s brilliant! It’s like they’re saying, ‘What if we just always had the best of both worlds – the X-Men and the Avengers – in one regular series?’ It’s exactly what I’ve been wanting, a constant team-up of these iconic heroes.
