The Status of Every Upcoming Disney Live-Action Remake: What’s Confirmed, What’s Cancelled & What’s Rumored

Disney has a huge number of projects in development, more than any other entertainment company. A major part of this is Marvel Studios, the team behind the incredibly popular Marvel Cinematic Universe. While the MCU hasn’t been perfect lately, they’re hoping to regain momentum with Avengers: Doomsday in 2026. Similarly, Disney’s Star Wars franchise is gearing up for a new film, The Mandalorian & Grogu, which will be the first Star Wars movie released since 2019. However, despite their importance, neither Marvel nor Star Wars is Disney’s biggest driver of success.

Disney consistently earns big profits from live-action remakes of its animated classics. For example, the 2025 release of Lilo & Stitch earned over $1 billion worldwide, proving audiences still enjoy these updated stories – especially when they offer a fresh take. With so many projects in development, it can be hard to follow what Disney is working on. Here’s a complete update on all of Disney’s live-action remakes: which ones are officially happening, which have been cancelled, and which are just rumors for now.

Confirmed Disney Live-Action Remakes

7) Moana

Currently, Moana is the only film on this list with a confirmed release date. The movie features Catherine Laga’aia as Moana and the voice of Dwayne Johnson as Maui. We can expect a trailer soon, which will give us a better idea of whether it’s a faithful adaptation or a new take on the original story.

6) Tangled

Many people adore the animated movie Tangled, which is a fresh take on the classic Rapunzel story. However, plans for a live-action version have faced some challenges. Things are looking up now, though, as Scarlett Johansson is reportedly interested in playing the villain, Mother Gothel.

5) Hercules

As a huge Marvel fan, I’ve always been impressed with the Russo brothers – they directed some of the biggest films in the MCU, like Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, and Captain America: Civil War. I was excited to hear they’re producing a new Hercules movie for Disney, with Guy Ritchie directing. There was some talk about disagreements between them and Disney, but thankfully, the project hasn’t been cancelled, which is great news!

4) Lilo & Stitch 2

Disney quickly approved a sequel to Lilo & Stitch. Although details about the plot and who will be involved haven’t been officially revealed, it’s likely many of the original cast and crew will return. Fans can also expect plenty of new alien characters in the follow-up.

3) Cruella 2

Disney made a smart move by creating a live-action film centered around a villain, and it worked! While Cruella didn’t achieve the same blockbuster success as Lilo & Stitch, it was still a hit with audiences and critics. Emma Stone is confirmed to reprise her role, and Disney is likely waiting for her availability to begin working on a sequel.

2) Bambi

Few Disney films are as emotionally impactful as Bambi, and it’s known for being quite upsetting at times. Those difficult moments might actually feel even stronger when the movie is remade with CGI and live-action. Although director Sarah Polley moved on from the project earlier this year, Disney still seems interested in making it happen.

1) Robin Hood

Disney revealed in 2020 that it plans to remake the beloved film Robin Hood, which tells the story of a heroic outlaw. Carlos López Estrada is set to direct the new version, which will be created using computer-generated imagery. However, Disney hasn’t announced when production will begin, keeping details under wraps for now.

Rumored Disney Live-Action Remakes

3) Sleeping Beauty

Disney frequently adapts its classic princess stories for film, and a new report suggests Sleeping Beauty is next. The upcoming movie, tentatively titled Aurora, won’t be a typical retelling; instead of being set in France, the story will take place in Mexico, offering a fresh cultural setting.

2) Tink

For years, there have been whispers about a live-action movie starring Tinker Bell, Peter Pan’s fairy companion. While some reports suggested Reese Witherspoon might play the lead, Disney hasn’t officially announced any plans. It’s still unclear if a live-action Tinker Bell movie will ever happen.

1) The Jungle Book 2

Disney’s remake of The Jungle Book was a huge hit, combining computer-generated imagery with live actors to bring the well-known story to life. While a sequel was announced soon after the first movie came out, it’s unlikely to still be in the works. Rumors of The Jungle Book 2 seem more accurate, as Disney hasn’t offered any substantial information about its progress.

Cancelled Disney Live-Action Remakes

3) The Aristocats

Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson had been working with Disney on a remake of The Aristocats, a project that initially felt like a perfect fit. However, when Disney had new leadership, the project was paused and ultimately cancelled. Questlove has said he’d still be interested in revisiting the idea in the future.

2) Aladdin 2

So, remember how Aladdin was a huge hit, raking in over a billion dollars? Everyone expected a sequel, and Disney definitely seemed to be considering one. But sadly, it’s not happening. Mena Massoud, who played Aladdin, has confirmed that the sequel is off the table…though he’s still up for coming back if they ever change their minds! It’s a bit disappointing, but at least he’s open to it.

1) The Hunchback of Notre Dame

A live-action version of The Hunchback of Notre Dame was first announced in 2019, but it seems the project is no longer in development. Composer Stephen Schwartz recently shared that they are not currently casting or working on the film.
