PlayStation recently held a Japanese-focused State of Play event. During the presentation, they shared details about the upcoming DLC for Elden Ring, called Shadow of the Erdtree, and announced the date for the second beta test of Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls, the new fighting game from Arc System Works. Beyond those major announcements, PlayStation also showcased a variety of smaller games, including the exciting news that the popular arcade racing game Tokyo Xtreme Racer is heading to PlayStation 5 soon.
A recent trailer revealed that Tokyo Xtreme Racer will be available on PS5 starting February 26th, 2026. The game has already become popular on PC with its simple, fast-paced arcade-style racing. If you enjoy classic racing games such as Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit 2 and OutRun, Tokyo Xtreme Racer is definitely worth checking out.
What is Tokyo Xtreme Racer?
Originally released in Japan as Shutokō Battle and known internationally as Tokyo Xtreme Racer, the game first came out in 1994. While it hasn’t been widely available since 2006 – aside from a few mobile versions – the 2025 reboot marks the first major release for fans in nearly two decades.
It was worth the wait! Players are really enjoying Tokyo Xtreme Racer on PC, which is great news after some initial concerns about the early access version. The developers at Genki have worked hard to improve the game, and their efforts were recognized with an Award for Excellence at the Japan Game Awards 2025.
People love and admire Tokyo Xtreme Racer because it focuses on the core fun of racing, cutting out unnecessary extras found in many modern arcade games. The game is all about expressing yourself through cool style and skillful driving. You’ll be racing in a futuristic, closed-off version of Tokyo, competing against numerous opponents to climb to the top of the rankings.
While not without its flaws, Tokyo Xtreme Racer offers a unique and enjoyable feature: Spirit Point Battles. These races aren’t just about speed; they challenge your mental fortitude as you attempt to break your opponent’s concentration while navigating busy streets. The game also includes several difficult boss races that will truly test even experienced racers. If you want a real driving challenge, try racing against Melancholic Angel, though she received a minor adjustment when TXR25 officially launched.
While some players wish there were more customization options, Tokyo Xtreme Racer 25 is a must-try for fans of old-school arcade racing. It really captures the feeling of the classic PS2 racing games, and if the developers continue to improve it, it could become a strong competitor to series like Forza Horizon and the latest Need for Speed games, which is great news for racing fans.
