The next Toy Story movie is scheduled to come out in 2026, and fans are starting to wonder what it will be like. It’s been seven years since the last film, which isn’t uncommon for this series – the shortest gap between Toy Story movies was four years. Now, the first trailer has been released, giving us a first look at what to expect from Toy Story 5.
The new trailer has brought up familiar concerns about the movie. Many viewers feel it undoes the satisfying conclusion of Toy Story 4 by bringing Woody and Buzz back together, and some believe it’s an unnecessary sequel made purely for profit. Those feelings are understandable – Toy Story 4 had a strong ending, and studios often revisit popular franchises simply to boost sales. However, I don’t think that’s what’s happening with this film.
Toy Story Movies Always Prove The Doubters Wrong

I’d probably share the worries about this sequel if it weren’t for the fact that we’ve seen this happen with Toy Story before. When the fourth movie was announced, people had the same concerns, but it turned out to be a touching, imaginative, and funny film that enhanced the entire series. So, I’m optimistic this time around too.
Even before the third movie was released – which Disney had been planning since acquiring Pixar in 2006, and officially confirmed in 2007 – people were concerned about how Disney would manage Pixar’s creative direction. But despite those worries, the film turned out to be one of the best animated movies of the past fifteen years.
Both Toy Story 3 and 4 handle similar themes of growing up, letting go, and accepting change – ideas that are central to the whole series. Each film complements the other perfectly. While a good reason is needed for Woody to return for a fifth movie, the filmmakers have consistently delivered strong stories, so it’s likely they’ll succeed again. The idea that “the age of toys is over” fits with the series’ focus on change and evolution, and it will be interesting to see how this plays out in the future.
The ending of the third movie was especially impactful because it mirrored the experience of growing up – not just for Andy, but for many of us in the audience. While it’s great that the series continues to be successful, and some might see that as a reluctance to move on – especially in today’s culture of nostalgia – that shouldn’t define Toy Story. The franchise can still explore change and growth while remaining popular.
As a lifelong movie fan, I’ve always loved the idea of toys having a life beyond childhood. I don’t have kids myself, but I always pictured my old Star Wars and wrestling figures bringing as much joy to them as they did to me – though my parents actually gave those away years ago! Still, I hope someone’s enjoying them now. That’s really what Toy Story gets at, and I think it’s why Pixar keeps bringing the series back – it connects people across generations, and that’s something special that should be celebrated.
Pixar Still Has A Problem To Fix

Pixar isn’t without its challenges. While Toy Story 5 doesn’t fix everything, it’s not the source of the issues either. The studio has been struggling with its newer films for a while, and this was made worse by the COVID-19 pandemic and Disney’s focus on streaming them on Disney+.
Pixar is working to find a better mix of new, original films and sequels – they haven’t quite hit that balance yet, though 2026 will see both Hoppers and Toy Story 5. Ideally, popular sequels can bring in new audiences who will then be excited about Pixar’s original stories. The key is to make these movies feel like events worth seeing in theaters and get families interested, and while Toy Story 5 is on the horizon, that’s not the only thing standing in the way of achieving that goal.
Toy Story 5 will be released on June 19th, 2026.
