The latest installment, Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, is now available, and with it comes the familiar challenge of unlocking new camouflage patterns. This year, players can earn four additional Mastery Camos by completing the Campaign and a special Endgame mode.
Before the game even came out, people were worried the new challenges would be harder to complete because of an added game mode that gave completionists even more things to unlock. Luckily, while unlocking all the camouflage is mostly the same as in the previous game, there’s one major change that actually makes the final stages easier.
When you earn the final Mastery Camo, it’s instantly available for all your weapons. This year, you don’t need to complete any challenges – on any weapon – to unlock and use it.
From the Activision blog post:
Final Mastery Camouflages don’t have separate Challenges to complete. Instead, they unlock automatically, just like in older Black Ops games. Simply unlock the third camo for the weapon you want, and then finish these steps:
- Genesis (CM): Unlock Chroma Flux on 30 total weapons.
- Singularity (MP): Unlock Tempest on 30 total weapons.
- Infestation (ZM): Unlock Doomsteel on 30 total weapons.
- Apocalypse (WZ): Unlock Absolute Zero on 30 total weapons.
Similar steps, but less of them per mode

As a researcher studying Call of Duty’s progression systems, I found that unlocking the reactive Mastery camo in Black Ops 6 was a multi-step process. First, you had to earn the second-to-last camo on a total of thirty-three different weapons. Then, to actually unlock the final reactive camo *on a specific weapon*, you needed to complete a unique challenge for that weapon individually. It was a bit grindy, requiring effort across a large number of guns!
Take the Multiplayer mode as an example: in Dark Spine, players first needed to reach Diamond rank with 33 different weapons. Only then could they start earning Dark Matter.
The progression system in Black Ops 7 is consistent until the final step. For example, in Multiplayer, unlocking the Tempest camo on 33 different weapons will instantly grant you the Singularity camo for use on all weapons – you don’t need to complete an additional challenge for each one.
Just like in Black Ops 6, you can unlock camouflage for your weapons by getting headshots in Multiplayer, critical kills in Zombies (including during the new Campaign camo challenge), and eliminations in Warzone. However, the special Warzone camouflages won’t be available until Warzone is fully integrated with Black Ops 7 in Season 1.
Activision’s blog details all of the various requirements for Camos in Black Ops 7.
The same amount of challenges to complete for more rewards

Black Ops 7 now features 16 Mastery Camos with the addition of the Campaign mode. But don’t worry, you only need to complete challenges for 12 tiers – the final Camo in each mode unlocks automatically.
It takes roughly the same effort as unlocking Dark Matter, Abyss, and Nebula in Black Ops 6, but you’ll now earn enough to complete 16 full sets of Mastery Camo. While it might feel a bit more manageable, the overall time commitment will likely be similar.
It’s also worth remembering that some weapons will be really difficult to use. How many of us struggled with launchers in Black Ops 6 and eventually stopped trying?
Okay, so as someone who loves unlocking everything, I’m already bracing myself for this! They’re adding new Camos through Weapon Prestige, and it’s going to be a bit of a challenge for completionists like me. Basically, as you level up the Prestige for *each* weapon, you unlock a unique Camo. And get this – you have to do it for *every* single weapon in the game! It’s a lot, but I’m kinda excited about the customization options.
Grab your favorite drinks and snacks, and prepare to really focus and play a lot to unlock everything quickly. Or, you might just drive yourself crazy trying!
