A classic action movie from the 1990s is now available to stream! When we think of ’90s action heroes, names like Will Smith, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Bruce Willis often come up. But don’t forget Brendan Fraser – he was a huge action star back then too. Many fans remember him fondly, and his most famous action film, The Mummy, is considered one of the best of the decade. Now, you can watch it again on streaming services.
Currently, the action-adventure film The Mummy is gaining popularity on MGM+, rising on the streaming charts. As of today, it’s the fourth most-watched movie on the platform, and its sequel, The Mummy Returns, isn’t far behind, sitting at number seven. The Mummy is a beloved classic from the 1990s, starring Brendan Fraser as Rick O’Connell, an adventurer who teams up with Evelyn Carnahan (Rachel Weisz) to explore an archaeological site in Hamunaptra. They soon discover they’re not alone, as a competing group awakens an ancient and dangerous curse linked to the High Priest Imhotep. Here’s what the movie is about:
During an archaeological excavation in the ancient city of Hamunaptra, a member of the French Foreign Legion—an American—unintentionally revives a mummy. This mummy then causes chaos while searching for the reborn soul of his beloved.
The Mummy was directed by Stephen Sommers, who co-wrote the script with Lloyd Fonvielle and Kevin Jarre. Alongside Fraser and Weisz, the film also starred John Hannah, Kevin J. O’Connor, Arnold Vosloo, Jonathan Hyde, and Omid Djalili. The Mummy was a major success in 1999, grossing over $417 million worldwide, against a budget of $80 million. The film also scored decent reviews from critics, earning a 63% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. However, audiences clearly loved it more, as it holds a 75% user rating on RT. “Stellar action, characters, and CGI effects for ’99, The Mummy is easily one of the best adventure/horror/action films out there,” read one recent user review, while another said, “Old school joyful cinema fun. Guilty Pleasure or not, it’s still a pleasure.”

Fans of the original 1990s The Mummy movie were thrilled to hear that Brendan Fraser is returning to the series. After the 2017 reboot starring Tom Cruise didn’t resonate with audiences, many hoped for another film with Fraser as Rick O’Connell, and their wish will come true in November 2025.
After a 17-year gap since 2008’s The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, a fourth Mummy movie is in the works. Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are both confirmed to return for the sequel, which will be produced by Universal Pictures. Surprisingly, the new film will ignore the events of Tomb of the Dragon Emperor and instead continue the story directly after the first two Mummy films. A release date hasn’t been announced yet.
