Following the announcement of their new Steam Machine, Valve has shared an update about the Steam Deck 2. Valve has long hinted at a follow-up to the original Steam Deck, but the release date and improvements to the hardware remained unclear. Now, Valve has provided more details about the next-generation handheld.
Valve engineer Pierre-Loup Griffais recently told IGN that the company is working on the next version of the Steam Deck, but is holding off on development until technology improves. They want the Steam Deck 2 to be a significant upgrade over the original, not just a minor improvement. While Valve has a clear vision for what the new handheld will be, they’re waiting for the necessary technology to become available before they can start building it.

We’re focused on ensuring the next Steam Deck offers a significant performance improvement that justifies it as a new product on its own, explained Griffais. We aren’t aiming for incremental gains like 20-50% faster performance with the same battery life. We want a clear, substantial leap forward. So, we’ve been designing the new version around the latest hardware and architectural advancements. We have a good idea of what the next Steam Deck will be, but currently, there aren’t any chips available that would deliver the truly next-generation experience we’re looking for.
According to Griffais, it’s unlikely the Steam Deck 2 will be released in 2026. A launch in 2027 seems like the earliest possible timeframe, as that would be five years after the first Steam Deck came out. However, even that is uncertain, and the new device might not arrive until 2028 or later.
Valve has announced plans to release new hardware next year, including the Steam Machine, a VR headset called the Steam Frame, and an updated Steam Controller. There’s also growing speculation that a new Half-Life game – possibly Half-Life 3 – is currently in development.
