It’s Incredible How Good of a Year Nintendo Has Had

Nintendo knew 2025 would be a crucial year, as launching a new gaming console – particularly one following the popular Switch – is a significant event. Fortunately, Nintendo has had a fantastic year, releasing a brand-new console, several major game titles, and continually improving its online service. While it may not quite match the incredible success of the original Switch’s launch in 2017, 2025 is shaping up to be one of Nintendo’s best years yet.

The Switch 2 Launch and Great Games Have Made This a Year to Remember

The Switch 2 is already a huge success, and could easily make this one of Nintendo’s best years yet. It’s become Nintendo’s fastest-selling console ever, surpassing the original Switch’s first-month sales of 2.74 million units in just under four days – selling 3.5 million units over a long weekend.

That’s a fantastic accomplishment! The console is on track to surpass the Wii U’s total sales by the end of the year, and could even approach the GameCube’s numbers if Nintendo has a strong holiday season. Considering it’s been out for less than a year, these sales figures are truly impressive. While the Wii U didn’t perform well, exceeding its lifetime sales in just six months is amazing.

The console is popular because of its excellent games, and Nintendo has consistently delivered. The year began with Mario Kart World, offering Switch 2 players a fresh take on the classic racing game. While the new open-world map has received mixed reactions from longtime fans, the core racing experience remains top-notch.

Shortly after, fans got what many are calling the best Donkey Kong game yet: Donkey Kong Bananza. This action-packed platformer takes place in a massive world that players can completely destroy. Breaking your way through the environment to overcome challenges in Bananza is incredibly enjoyable, and it’s easily one of the highlights of 2025. It comes from the same talented team behind Super Mario Odyssey on the original Switch, and that quality is immediately apparent thanks to its polished presentation and creative gameplay.

Nintendo continued its success with Pokémon Legends: Z-A. While the game offers strong battling, some players found the world exploration and extra activities a bit limited. Nevertheless, it’s a reliable Pokémon title, guaranteed to be a hit for Nintendo. Beyond Nintendo’s own popular games, titles like Hades 2 and Hollow Knight: Silksong demonstrate that the Switch is still a fantastic platform for independent games. However, Nintendo may have saved the best for last.

Nintendo Could Finish 2025 in Style

Even with exciting releases like Mario Kart World, Donkey Kong Bananza, and Pokémon Legends: Z-A, nothing has generated quite as much excitement as Metroid Prime 4: Beyond. Fans of the Metroid Prime series have been eagerly awaiting a new installment for over ten years. While Federation Force was a spin-off and Metroid Dread a fantastic return to the classic style, Prime fans hadn’t received any news from Nintendo since 2017.

Fans first learned about Metroid Prime 4 several years ago, but development has had a few twists and turns. Originally, Bandai Namco Studios was set to lead the project, but Retro Studios later took over. After eight years of waiting, Metroid Prime 4: Beyond is now scheduled to release on December 4th, 2025.

Every main Metroid Prime game has received a score of 90 or higher on Metacritic, creating high expectations for Metroid Prime 4. While success isn’t guaranteed, fans are very excited about the upcoming release. If the game lives up to the hype, Nintendo is likely to sell even more Switch 2 consoles than anticipated during the holiday season, potentially making December a huge month for them as shoppers decide what to put on their wishlists.

As a Nintendo fan, I’m really excited to see Nintendo Switch Online gaining on Xbox Game Pass in terms of subscribers! Last I checked, NSO has about 34 million members, while Game Pass is around 35 million. If the Switch 2 brings in a lot of new players, NSO could actually pass Game Pass soon. Plus, it’s worth remembering that an NSO membership is a lot more affordable than Game Pass, which is a big bonus!

Nintendo is set to have a fantastic 2025, and 2026 is looking promising for gamers too. With titles like Mario Tennis Fever, Splatoon Raiders, and The Duskbloods on the horizon, plus many other exciting games, the new Switch 2 is proving to be a huge hit. Nintendo is in a great position to build on this success with a wealth of quality games.
