‘The Witcher’ Season 4 Watched by Half Previous Season Viewers

Viewership is down for the recently relaunched The Witcher on Netflix, according to new streaming numbers. Season 4 has generated a lot of discussion because Liam Hemsworth has taken over the role of Geralt of Rivia, previously played by Henry Cavill. This casting change has been controversial, much like the decision to cast David Corenswet as the new Superman. However, while the new Superman appears to be a success for Warner Bros., Netflix isn’t seeing the same positive results with the recasting of The Witcher.

The fourth season of The Witcher quickly became popular on Netflix, reaching number 2 on the English TV list with 7.4 million views in its first four days, according to What’s on Netflix. While we don’t have exact numbers for the first season, Season 2 had 18.5 million views in its first week. Although that week was longer by three days, Season 4 likely didn’t double its audience in that time. Season 3 attracted 15.2 million viewers, but it was released in two parts, first in June 2023 and then again in July.

What is Really Behind ‘The Witcher’s Viewership Drop?

Netflix

Season 4 of The Witcher’s viewership numbers tell a clear story. While Henry Cavill’s exit likely caused some fans to stop watching, the show had been steadily losing audience members with each season – a common pattern for Netflix series. This is a big reason why Netflix often cancels shows after three seasons; they’ve found that returning series tend to attract fewer viewers than brand new ones.

The timing of The Witcher‘s releases seems to affect how many people watch it right away. Season 4 launched on October 30, 2025 – the day before Halloween – and it’s possible viewers were more focused on Halloween content at that time, leading to lower initial viewership compared to earlier seasons. Seasons 1 and 2 both premiered close to holiday weekends in December 2019 and 2021, respectively. Season 3 took a different approach, releasing in the summer with Part 1 on June 29, 2023, and Part 2 on July 27, 2023.

It’s been a while since new seasons of The Witcher have arrived. Six years have passed since the show first premiered on Netflix, and two years since Season 3 finished airing. With Season 3 split into two parts and Henry Cavill’s last appearance as Geralt, many viewers likely believed the series had ended – and some fans even said so. As the show approaches its fifth and final season, it might not be the big, satisfying conclusion Netflix originally hoped for when they started making The Witcher.
