Reimagining a beloved fantasy story is never easy, but a new team is taking on that challenge with a classic tale that’s over 160 years old. Following two popular Disney adaptations, this project aims to be something truly special, and they’ve assembled a talented cast and crew to help make it happen. It won’t be simple, but they’re hoping to create a fresh take on a familiar story.
Universal Pictures is developing a fresh take on Lewis Carroll’s classic, Alice in Wonderland. The Hollywood Reporter announced that the project has assembled a talented team, including Marc Platt, the producer behind Wicked, and director Lorene Scafaria, known for Hustlers. Rising music star Sabrina Carpenter will not only star in the film but also serve as a producer.
Currently, the musical project based on Alice in Wonderland doesn’t have a title or a planned release date. While details about Carpenter’s role are still unknown, many expect her to play Alice. Lorene Scafaria, who also directed and wrote Hustlers, will be directing and writing the script for this new film.
Barbra Platt recently starred in the hugely successful Wicked, both on stage and in cinemas, and is about to release the sequel, Wicked: For Good, later this month. Platt and Carpenter will produce the film with Leslie Morgenstein and Elysa Koplovitz Dutton from Alloy Entertainment.
Disney has released several versions of Alice in Wonderland, starting with a live-action film directed by Tim Burton in 2010. Starring Mia Wasikowska as Alice and Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter, the movie was a huge success, earning over $1 billion worldwide. A sequel, Alice Through the Looking Glass, followed in 2016, grossing around $299 million. However, the most beloved version remains Disney’s animated classic from the 1950s.
Although her exact involvement is still unclear, sources say Sabrina Carpenter is very enthusiastic about this project and first pitched her ideas to the studio about a year ago, even sharing a lookbook. Carpenter remains a major force in music, with her latest album, Man’s Best Friend, producing several popular songs and earning her multiple Grammy nominations, including for Record of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance. She also recently made a memorable debut on Saturday Night Live, performing “Manchild” after a standout performance of “Tears” at the VMAs.
I’m really intrigued by her next project – a big-screen adaptation of a beloved character. With the team she’s assembled, it feels like it could be something special, and I’m definitely hoping we get some more details soon. I’m cautiously optimistic, but the potential is definitely there.
