Michael C. Hall is stepping back into a major role outside of the Dexter universe for the first time since 2021. While he’s been playing Dexter Morgan on and off since 2006, including in Dexter: New Blood and the recently cancelled Dexter: Original Sin, he’s now returning as Dexter in season 2 of Dexter: Resurrection. This comes after season 1 received positive reviews and attracted a large audience.
Even though Showtime and Paramount have promised more Dexter in the future, Michael C. Hall is also working on a new project. According to The Hollywood Reporter, he’s joined the cast of the spy thriller Stratagem. Details about his role in the movie haven’t been released yet.
I’m really excited about this new film, Stratagem! Michael C. Hall is going to be starring alongside Noomi Rapace and Teo Yoo, who I loved in Past Lives. It’s directed by Michael Idov, and he co-wrote the script with Lily Idov – they’re the team behind the fantastic German spy series Deutschland 89, so I have high hopes for this one!
Stratagem follows CIA agent Stella Turner (Rapace) as she’s sent on a secret mission to win the trust of tech innovator Daniel Sim (Yoo). Her goal is to stop sensitive U.S. defense information from being leaked. But as she gets closer to Daniel, Stella discovers he’s playing her, and has his own secret agenda.
Filming for Stratagem is scheduled to start in early 2026. It’s currently unknown if this will overlap with or affect Michael C. Hall’s schedule for the second season of Dexter: Resurrection, which is also planned to begin filming around the middle of 2026.
Michael C. Hall Steps Outside The Dexter Franchise Again
With his return to the role of Dexter Morgan on the horizon, Michael C. Hall has been consistently working in a variety of projects. Before reprising his famous role, he took on leading parts in films like the 2021 thriller John and the Hole and appeared in the 2020 miniseries The Defeated. Other recent credits include roles in the 2019 political drama The Report, the comedy Game Night (2018), the Harlan Coben series Safe, and a cameo as John F. Kennedy in The Crown (2017). Stratagem represents Hall’s most significant role in four years outside of the Dexter universe.
It’s great news that Michael C. Hall is returning as Dexter Morgan in season 2 of Resurrection, but it’s also exciting to see him take on diverse roles in film. His new spy thriller, Stratagem, allows him to demonstrate his range as an actor, and he’ll have the chance to play both heroic and villainous characters.
