Following the success of Oppenheimer, director Christopher Nolan is preparing to release his next large-scale film, The Odyssey, next summer. Starring Matt Damon as Odysseus, the movie retells the classic story of the hero’s long and challenging journey home after the Trojan War. Tickets for IMAX showings have already sold out – they went on sale a year early! – making The Odyssey a likely blockbuster in 2026. Universal Pictures has been keeping details quiet until now, but a new cover story in Empire magazine has just revealed a first look.
The latest issue of Empire magazine has a striking cover featuring Damon as Odysseus, with the Trojan horse looming in the background. This issue offers a first look at highly anticipated films for 2026, including The Odyssey. A special cover for Empire subscribers showcases an illustration of soldiers bringing the Trojan horse to the city of Troy. You can see both covers below.
This month’s cover of #TheOdyssey, featuring an illustration by Paul Shipper, depicts warriors pulling the Trojan Horse toward the city of Troy.

A New Odyssey Trailer Could Be Coming Soon
The fact that The Odyssey is featured prominently in the latest issue of Empire magazine suggests Universal Pictures is starting to seriously promote the film. This magazine cover is the first official promotional image released since a photo of Matt Damon as Odysseus was shared when filming began in February. While a short teaser trailer was shown before screenings of Jurassic World Rebirth this summer, it wasn’t released online. However, a full trailer for The Odyssey could be coming soon for the general public.
Rumors suggest that the trailer for the upcoming film The Odyssey will be shown before screenings of James Cameron’s Avatar: Fire and Ash, which comes out in December. Universal Pictures used a similar tactic to promote Oppenheimer, releasing a teaser trailer with Avatar: The Way of Water. Because Avatar will be playing in high-quality theaters like IMAX during the holidays, it’s a smart move to use its release to start building excitement for Odyssey. This would guarantee a large audience for the trailer and allow Universal to showcase the epic scale of director Christopher Nolan’s new film on a massive screen.
It will be fascinating to see what Universal shares with Empire magazine or in a new trailer soon. While the story of The Odyssey is already familiar, the studio likely wants to avoid revealing too much too early. However, fans are eager to see more of the impressive cast and how their characters fit into the film. Given the movie’s many figures from Greek mythology, a glimpse of how Nolan has envisioned them – perhaps through new photos or a short teaser – would be fantastic.
The artwork for the Empire covers strongly suggests what we can expect from the upcoming film. Christopher Nolan is known for his grand, immersive storytelling, and The Odyssey is an ideal story for his style. While there have been other good Odyssey movies, this one promises to be something truly special.
