Why Batman and Wonder Woman’s Absolute Crossover Will Change Everything

DC Comics is bringing together its popular new versions of Batman and Wonder Woman for a special crossover event that will launch a fresh direction for the Absolute Universe. The Absolute line of comics recently celebrated its first anniversary, and so far, these heroes have been facing challenges on their own. However, that will change this December and January when the writers and artists behind Absolute Wonder Woman and Absolute Batman collaborate on a two-part story designed to dramatically alter everything these characters know.

This isn’t the first time the Absolute Universe stories have crossed over, though. That happened in Absolute Evil #1, a standalone story that highlighted the villains of this world. Characters like National Security Adviser Veronica Cale and the mysterious billionaire known as the Joker teamed up, forming their own version of the ‘Justice League’ to maintain the system that benefits them. They’ve promised to work together to stop new heroes, but they’re not ready for the massive changes that Absolute Batman and Absolute Wonder Woman are about to cause.

Absolute Batman and Wonder Woman are Coming Together for an Epic Team-Up

The first official crossover between titles in the Absolute Universe was announced at San Diego Comic-Con this year. The story starts in December’s Absolute Wonder Woman #15, where Wonder Woman travels to Gotham City to investigate a mysterious symbol found at a crime scene and team up with Batman to solve a string of unusual murders. Then, in January’s Absolute Batman #16, Batman will ask Wonder Woman for help with Waylon Jones, who is turning into Killer Croc. Their mission to fix this transformation will lead them to, quite literally, hell.

This is a fantastic way to set up a crossover event. It respects the existing storylines of both comics and could really strengthen both titles going forward. However, it does make you wonder why Batman and Wonder Woman were chosen for the first team-up. It’s not that those two aren’t great, but there were so many other possibilities! Imagine a crossover with the Flash and Green Lantern, Superman and Wonder Woman, or even Batman and Martian Manhunter – that would have been wonderfully strange!

It’s important to realize the people creating the Absolute Universe aren’t just doing this for fun. While the stories and events have been exciting, the creators have emphasized that everything is carefully planned. They’re building a large-scale story about how heroes can succeed in a world designed to defeat them. That’s why this crossover follows Absolute Evil – that story showed how tough things would be, and Absolute Batman and Absolute Wonder Woman will demonstrate how heroes can overcome those challenges.

The Absolute Universe is Approaching Its Big Inflection Point

I think the reason Absolute Batman and Absolute Wonder Woman are so loved isn’t just about big moments or the ‘cool factor’. It’s because these stories really get at the heart of what makes these heroes special: standing up to powerful, corrupt systems and doing what’s right, even when it feels like an impossible fight. Whether it’s Batman taking on a ruthless billionaire or Wonder Woman freeing people from a hidden prison, these books just connect with readers on a deeper level than any others in the Absolute series, in my opinion.

Bringing these two books together is a brilliant move for the Absolute line. For the first time, the two most well-known heroes from the Absolute Universe, both committed to fighting against fate itself, will join forces. Though they might face challenges – Bruce can be difficult – they’ll discover they’re much more effective when they combine their strengths to solve the problems in their world. While the Absolute Justice League teamed up because they had to, these heroes will work together out of a genuine desire to help.

Currently, the only announced team-up is between Absolute Wonder Woman and Absolute Batman. However, it’s inevitable that all the Absolute heroes will eventually unite—it’s just a matter of when. What’s great is that this collaboration will unfold organically. DC isn’t forcing a crossover; instead, the story is building towards a meaningful team-up that feels natural. This event will expand the Absolute Universe and allow these characters to evolve, ultimately becoming what this world needs—a force of hope against the encroaching darkness.

Darkseid believed creating the Absolute Universe would strip the heroes of their strengths, but he underestimated their reliance on one another. The first encounter between Batman and Wonder Woman will spark a realization: by uniting and collaborating, these heroes can achieve far more. While it will take time for all the heroes to connect, this initial team-up marks the start of a new era for the Absolute Universe.
