The Amateur,” featuring Rami Malek and John Bernthal, will debut on Hulu next Thursday (July 17th), approximately three months following its initial theater release. Disney confirmed this addition to their streaming service on Wednesday. In the film, Malek plays a CIA analyst seeking revenge for his wife’s murder, while Bernthal portrays a CIA field agent he befriends. The movie received mixed reviews, but it managed to surpass its production costs, though its profitability remains uncertain. Rapidly moving to streaming platforms is becoming more common for new releases these days.
The Amateur” – A Timeless Action-Thriller with an Unusual Twist
In this classic tale of vengeance, the protagonist, Charlie (played by Malek), initially appears unprepared for his mission due to apparent lack of skills. Even those closest to him at the CIA doubt his ability to exact revenge for Sarah’s (Rachel Brosnahan) death, who ironically were responsible for it. Despite receiving hurried training, Charlie proves inept with firearms and wrestles with the moral implications of taking a life directly. However, he demonstrates an exceptional talent for creating homemade explosives. In numerous instances, his analytical intellect as a cryptographer proves to be his most valuable asset.
In theory, this work offers an intriguing take on its genre, but it often falls short in the eyes of critics. Many viewers found that Charlie’s departure from the normative action hero didn’t effectively heighten the film’s emotional intensity, which was particularly disappointing given the movie’s reliance on the problematic trope known as “fridging” to drive the plot forward. This was especially frustrating for audiences because they felt that Charlie’s unique qualities weren’t utilized to create compelling emotional engagement with the story.
The film “The Amateur” received a Tomatometer score of 61% on Rotten Tomatoes, but was generally well-received overall. It fared better with audiences, earning an 88% positive rating on the Popcornmeter and garnering over 2,500 user reviews. Streaming services may help the movie reach a larger audience. Critics noted that the film might have faced challenges competing in theaters due to its release alongside “A Minecraft Movie,” “Warfare,” and “Drop.” The film became available for digital rental or purchase on June 10th, and it was released on Blu-ray this week.
While this year’s release may not be his most successful, it’s undeniably significant for Bernthal. The actor has recently reappeared as the Punisher in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s “Daredevil: Born Again,” and will also star in the upcoming sequel “The Accountant 2.” Just last month, he was seen on Hulu in “The Bear Season 4.”
Beginning July 17th, the film titled “The Amateur” can be streamed on Hulu. Currently, it’s also accessible for purchase or rental in digital video on demand (PVOD) stores, as well as on Blu-ray.
