Spider-Man is consistently one of Marvel’s most resilient heroes. Though not as physically powerful as characters like the Hulk or Thor, he’s incredibly strong – able to lift about ten tons with ease – and has demonstrated remarkable feats of strength. He can withstand a lot of damage, assuming anyone can actually land a hit. Spidey’s incredible agility, combined with his spider-sense which warns him of incoming attacks, makes him exceptionally difficult to hit. He dodges roughly 95% of attacks, meaning he rarely needs to rely on brute strength, toughness, or his healing ability during a fight.
Even though Spider-Man is incredibly fast and strong, certain villains have consistently proven to be a match for him. These enemies have pushed him to his absolute limit, and he hasn’t always survived. In fact, these seven Marvel villains have defeated Spider-Man in combat, managing to overcome his skills and abilities.
7) Carnage

Carnage is Spider-Man’s most dangerous enemy, and has consistently been a tough opponent. One of Carnage’s biggest advantages is that Spider-Man’s spider-sense couldn’t detect his attacks. Carnage is just as strong and fast as Spider-Man, and often even more so, making their fights incredibly brutal. Throughout their history, Carnage has frequently defeated Spider-Man, and Peter Parker often needed Venom’s assistance to stand a chance – early encounters usually ended with Carnage easily winning.
6) Venom

Venom rapidly became one of Spider-Man’s greatest enemies. Initially, the symbiote and Peter Parker had a great partnership, but things turned sour when the symbiote tried to permanently attach itself to him and he fought it off. Around the same time, Spider-Man unintentionally ruined the career of Eddie Brock, a journalist with a questionable reputation. This led Brock and the symbiote to join forces, creating Venom, and targeting Spider-Man. Their early battles were tough for Spider-Man, as Venom was incredibly powerful – he was immune to Spider-Man’s spider-sense, and much faster and stronger, repeatedly defeating him.
5) Vulture

Adrian Toomes turned to a life of crime as the Vulture after being cheated by a business partner, and he developed a strong dislike for Spider-Man. Using a special harness that gives him enhanced strength, he’s become a formidable opponent. In a recent fight, Vulture pushed Spider-Man to his limits, nearly defeating him and forcing him to seek help from the Green Goblin. It was a surprising turn of events, as Vulture had never inflicted such a severe beating on Spider-Man before.
4) Morlun

As a huge Spider-Man fan, let me tell you, Morlun is terrifying. He’s one of these ‘Inheritors’ – basically a vampire who feeds on the energy of people linked to Spider-Man’s powers. Their first couple of fights were brutal – seriously, the worst beatings Peter has ever taken. Morlun was just so much stronger and faster, he could even bypass Spider-Man’s spider-sense! Peter only survived the first time thanks to help from another spider-powered guy, Ezekial, but Morlun brutally killed Ezekial in their second fight. It really showed just how dangerous and ruthless Morlun is – he’s a truly frightening villain.
3) Kraven the Hunter

Kraven the Hunter was renowned as the world’s best hunter until Spider-Man entered his life. Intrigued by the young hero, Kraven sought to prove his skills against him, leading to many battles – and even a membership in the original Sinister Six. Frustrated by constant defeats, Kraven became determined to demonstrate his superiority. In the story “Kraven’s Last Hunt,” he brutally attacked Spider-Man, leaving him for dead and then impersonating the hero, attempting to prove he could be a better crimefighter. Ultimately, Kraven took his own life, content with what he perceived as a victory. Though he’s returned as a clone since then, he hasn’t been able to recapture that same level of success.
2) Doctor Octopus

Doctor Octopus is consistently ranked among Spider-Man’s most dangerous foes, right up there with the Green Goblin. Despite not always appearing physically imposing, his mechanical arms make him a truly formidable villain. Although Spider-Man has often defeated him, Doc Ock has also had his victories, notably in “Revenge of the Sinister Six,” where his adamantium arms nearly cost Spider-Man his life – it’s a story worth reading! However, he’s most infamous for seemingly killing Spider-Man and taking over his body. This shocking event launched the acclaimed Superior Spider-Man storyline, which explored the idea of Doctor Octopus actually being a ‘better’ Spider-Man.
1) Green Goblin

The long-standing rivalry between Green Goblin and Spider-Man has had devastating consequences for both of them. For years, they’ve been locked in a dangerous cycle of escalating conflict. Norman Osborn’s Goblin formula granted him strength and resilience comparable to, and likely exceeding, Spider-Man’s. They’ve fought countless brutal battles, with Osborn coming dangerously close to killing Peter Parker multiple times – though he once actually killed Spider-Man, it was a different person wearing the mask, Ben Reilly. These fights are always deeply personal, and the Goblin has often gained the upper hand against Spider-Man.
