Horizon Steel Frontiers Developers “Worked Closely” With Guerrilla Games to Move From Decima Engine

Although the announcement of Horizon Steel Frontiers was expected, many were surprised to learn it wasn’t being built using Guerrilla Games’ Decima Engine, but instead with Unreal Engine 5. In an interview with IGN, the game’s executive producer, Sunggu Lee, explained the reasoning behind this choice.

Lee acknowledged Guerrilla Games’ impressive technical skills, highlighting how the Decima Engine creates incredibly detailed and beautiful visuals. He also pointed out that adapting those high-quality visuals to work within Unreal Engine 5 wasn’t a simple process and presented some difficulties.

Lee announced that Horizon Steel Frontiers is being built with Unreal Engine 5. He explained that while the original Decima engine was fantastic and key to the visual success of Horizon, transferring all of its high-quality assets to Unreal Engine 5 was a significant undertaking.

Lee discussed the game’s title and how they worked closely with Guerrilla Games to ensure Horizon Steel Frontiers stayed true to the artistic style of the Horizon series. He also highlighted how powerful Unreal Engine 5 was in bringing that vision to life.

We collaborated closely with Guerrilla to maintain the original game’s stunning visuals while developing gameplay specifically for Steel Frontiers. By utilizing the advanced graphics of Unreal Engine 5, we’re delivering incredible visuals and seamless multiplayer on both mobile and PC (PURPLE).

I was super excited to hear about Horizon Steel Frontiers this week! It’s coming to PC, iOS, and Android, which is awesome. From what I’ve heard, it’s going to have a lot of what makes the Horizon games great – like riding Machines around the world – but also a bunch of new stuff. Lee talked about some of those new features when they announced the game, and I can’t wait to see them in action.

We’ve introduced new and creative ways to defeat the massive machines in the game. For instance, once you damage a specific component, you can use a Pullcaster to quickly climb onto the machine, place traps on the weakened area, and apply various negative effects.

So, this new MMO drops you into this place called the Deadlands, and it’s HUGE – tons of other players will be running around with you. Basically, we’re all hunters teaming up to take down these massive Machines. They showed off some gameplay trailers, and honestly, it reminded me a lot of Monster Hunter – you know, big monsters, cooperative hunts, that whole vibe.

NCSoft has shared that their upcoming game, Horizon Steel Frontiers, is being built with significant help from AI, impacting everything from coding to art creation. They also mentioned that other game developers are embracing these AI tools, and we can expect to see more games made this way in the future.
