Valve first released the Steam Machine in 2015, but it wasn’t very successful and was eventually discontinued. That’s why it was surprising when Valve announced a new Steam Machine model for 2026, especially since they’ve been focusing on the popular Steam Deck handheld. However, Valve is giving the small gaming PC another try, and this time, it feels like it could actually work.
For over ten years, Steam has been the go-to place to buy PC games, and the number of new games added keeps growing. Many games now launch on Steam first, especially those released as ‘Early Access’ versions. This is particularly common for independent, or ‘indie’, games, as releasing on PC is simpler and less expensive than launching on consoles. This could be the perfect time for Steam to succeed with its Steam Machine.
The Gaming Landscape Is Ready for More Ways to Play PC Games
Considering the first Steam Machine wasn’t successful, it’s surprising to see Valve trying again. However, the gaming world has changed a lot in the past decade. Back in 2015, Steam released around 2,500 new games. Last year, that number jumped to over 15,000. This significant growth makes a device specifically built for Steam gaming much more appealing now.
For a long time, consoles have been the go-to for many gamers because they’re simpler to buy and use – you don’t have to worry about whether a game will actually run on your system. However, increasingly, the most popular new games are released on PCs first, like on Steam. This is leading more and more players to switch to PC gaming, even if they previously preferred consoles.
Games like Fields of Mistria are really challenging Stardew Valley as the best in the genre, and it’s been a long time since something has come close. However, it’s currently only available on Steam in its early stages. We’ve seen this with other games too, like Hades 2, which launched on PC before consoles. With so much hype around new releases on social media, many players want to jump in right away, but not everyone enjoys playing on a computer.
If you’re tired of being stuck at a computer desk, there are other ways to enjoy your PC games. The Steam Deck, which came out in 2022, has become very popular, especially with people waiting for the new Nintendo Switch. It offers access to a huge library of PC games, and many gamers want to play their Steam titles on the go. While the Steam Deck is a good handheld option, it’s not perfect for everyone. Some people prefer the comfort of playing on a couch with a controller, and a large handheld device doesn’t quite offer that same experience. This is where the Steam Machine could be a really smart idea.
The Steam Machine is a small device that connects to your TV, giving it a console-like feel. However, it’s actually a powerful PC running Steam OS, a gaming-focused system. Because it’s a PC, you can also install games from other platforms, making it more versatile than a typical console. It offers a simple gaming experience, combined with the extensive Steam game library and the convenience of playing on your TV – and it’s more powerful than the Steam Deck. Whether it’s a good deal really depends on the price.
Gamers Want to Play More Indies on Console, and Steam Machine Might Be the Solution

I play a lot of independent, or ‘indie,’ games, particularly the relaxing and comforting ones. I often see casual gamers asking the same question whenever a new indie game is announced: “Will it be available on Nintendo Switch?” Unfortunately, the answer isn’t always simple. It takes time and money to adapt a game for handheld consoles or any console, and many indie developers don’t have the resources to do so. For players who are excited about new indie titles but don’t want to deal with the complexities of building a gaming PC, the Steam Machine could be a great option.
I’ll be honest, I’ve never been a big fan of PC gaming. I’ve definitely spent a lot of time playing The Sims 4 on a computer, but I much prefer playing games on a console with a controller, relaxing on the couch. Because I prioritize comfort, I’ve never bought a really powerful gaming PC – I always choose the newest console instead. However, that means I sometimes miss out on games that are only available on platforms like Steam. When I see the recommended system requirements, I often have to skip those games and wait for a version to come out for my PS5 or Switch.
I’ve been considering the Steam Deck, and it seems a lot of cozy and indie game fans are too. However, the Steam Deck isn’t perfect – not all Steam games are compatible, and it can be a bit heavy for a handheld device. This makes the Steam Machine an appealing option. It’s more powerful and designed for easy TV gaming. While the Steam Deck can be a hard sell for some, the Steam Machine – which is essentially a console powered by your Steam library – looks like a great alternative.
As a gamer, I’m really excited about the potential of the Steam Machine. It could be amazing if it gives us a console-like experience but also lets us play all those cool indie games that often show up on Steam first, or sometimes only on Steam. It’d be great for those games to reach a wider audience, especially people who prefer playing on consoles. Honestly, it feels like a way to play these titles before they might eventually come to PlayStation, Xbox, or Switch. But there’s one big question mark hanging over everything: we still have no idea how much it’s going to cost!
With consoles getting increasingly pricey, the Steam Machine’s price will be crucial to its success. If it costs as much or more than a powerful gaming PC, it probably won’t be popular. However, if it’s priced competitively with current consoles, many gamers might choose it over a future PlayStation or Xbox. The huge library of games available on Steam, particularly the many unique indie titles, is a major draw, as these games might not be available on traditional consoles.
I’m really excited to hear how much the Steam Machine will cost. If it’s affordable, it could be a game-changer for independent game developers and their fans. A console-like device that can play a lot of Steam’s indie games offers a great value that many people will find hard to resist.
I’m really curious to hear what everyone thinks about the Steam Machine! What are your first impressions? Let’s chat about it over on the ComicBook Forum – come join the discussion!
