Disney+ Just Quietly Released 3 New Star Wars Sequels

Star Wars is well-known for making lots of sequels, and recently, the franchise quietly released three new stories all at once. While fans are looking forward to The Mandalorian & Grogu returning to theaters in 2026, Star Wars hasn’t stopped creating new content for Disney+. Just last year, 2025, viewers enjoyed the second season of Andor, a third season of Visions, Tales of the Underworld, and a new LEGO Star Wars series.

From the beginning, Star Wars: Visions has been promoted as a collection of animated shorts that aren’t part of the official Star Wars story. This meant you could watch any episode without needing to know anything about what came before. But the recently released Volume 3, which came out on October 29, 2025, includes three episodes that continue stories from previous installments of the series.

Star Wars: Vision’s Three Sequel Episodes

As a huge Star Wars fan, I was excited to dive into Volume 3 of Star Wars: Visions. It’s got nine shorts total, and what’s really cool is that three of them actually continue stories we started seeing in Season 1! Episodes 1, 3, and 6 pick up where those earlier ones left off, adding to the ever-growing list of sequels and continuations in the Star Wars universe. It’s fun to see those threads carried forward!

The latest installment of Visions, Volume 3, Episode 1, titled “The Duel: Payback,” brings back the popular character Ronin. Often described as a samurai in the Star Wars universe, Ronin is a skilled warrior who fights with a lightsaber. Previously, in Volume 1, Ronin won a battle against Kouru. This new episode shows what happens next, as Ronin faces off against a powerful Jedi Master.

After the character Ronin proved popular in Visions Volume 1, a novel based on him was published, called Star Wars Visions: Ronin. The book continued the story from the Volume 1 episode, starting with a retelling of those events in its first chapter.

As a Star Wars fan, I was really excited to see Kara return in “The Ninth Jedi: Child of Hope,” the second episode of Star Wars: Visions Volume 3. The original “The Ninth Jedi” from Volume 1 was a huge hit, and this new episode picks up directly where that one left off, showing Kara on the run from some persistent bounty hunters. It’s great to see this character’s story continued!

Due to the popularity of Kara and “The Ninth Jedi,” Lucasfilm is creating a follow-up series called Star Wars: Visions Presents – The Ninth Jedi. This new series will continue Kara’s story and is scheduled to come out in 2026.

Episode 6, “The Lost Ones,” is the last of the sequel episodes in Visions Volume 3. It continues the story of a character named F, who was originally introduced in the Volume 1 episode, “The Village Bride.” Like the other Volume 3 sequels, “The Lost Ones” directly follows F’s journey and builds on their character development from the earlier episode.

The remaining stories in Visions Volume 3 are each self-contained and aren’t connected to anything else in the Visions series or the broader Star Wars universe. But because Volume 3 included follow-ups to previous stories, it suggests that Star Wars could create sequels for other Visions episodes in the future.

How Star Wars Decides Which Stories Get Sequels

Star Wars often decides on sequels to its projects, like the Visions series, based on how well they perform. The three episodes from Volume 1 that got follow-ups likely wouldn’t have received Volume 3 sequels if audiences hadn’t enjoyed them as much initially.

A recent example of this is The Acolyte. While Lucasfilm didn’t officially state how long the show would run, the ending of Season 1 suggests they intended to create at least a second season. Unfortunately, due to negative feedback from viewers, low ratings, and high production costs, the show was ultimately cancelled.

Whether a show or movie gets a sequel usually depends on how well it does financially. We’ve seen reports that The Mandalorian & Grogu could get future movies, but only if the first one is a box office success. While it feels wrong to judge a project’s value just by how much money it makes, the Star Wars franchise requires a large upfront investment, so financial performance is a key factor.

Usually, Star Wars decisions are driven by viewership numbers and profits. However, sometimes they plan out a whole series in advance. A great example is Andor, which was critically acclaimed. If Lucasfilm and Disney had wanted to continue it with a third season, the positive response would have justified it. But the story Andor told reached a natural conclusion, so the show ended after two seasons.

Star Wars Projects That Still Need Sequels

Most Star Wars stories have already been continued, but a few haven’t received a proper conclusion or enough episodes to fully tell their story.

When I think about potential projects, Skeleton Crew immediately comes to mind. The Disney+ series added fresh stories to the Star Wars universe, and the characters definitely have more to offer. While it wasn’t as revolutionary as Andor, it’s worth remembering that the first seasons of The Clone Wars and Rebels also had a slow start. Despite initial reactions, both of those shows eventually became fan favorites and some of the most beloved Star Wars content ever made.

Star Wars could continue the story from the “The Smuggler” episode of Visions. This episode followed Chita, a smuggler voiced by Emma Myers (known from Wednesday), and Arluu, a prince voiced by Tanner Buchanan (Cobra Kai). It also introduced a new Jedi character named Gleenu. The episode ended with hints that these characters would become involved in the Rebellion around the time of A New Hope, leaving their storylines open for further development.

Viewers generally liked “The Smuggler,” and the ending suggests another story could happen. While there probably isn’t enough content for a full spin-off show, it’s possible we could see at least one more episode with those characters.
