The 2018 horror film Cam was written by Isa Mazzei, a former cam girl herself. Mazzei initially planned to make a documentary about the lives of cam girls, but she realized a horror movie would be a more effective way to convey the experience. She explained to Vice that people often didn’t understand camming, even after she tried to explain it. Cam centers on Alice, a camgirl who discovers someone has created a doppelganger account and is performing disturbing acts in her place. The film is a visually striking blend of horror, thriller, and mystery, creating a gritty yet beautiful take on techno-horror.
Cam Is Not Your Average Horror Movie
The movie’s story is largely based on the creator’s personal experience with having her camgirl videos illegally copied and shared online without her permission. As Rotten Tomatoes puts it, the film centers around a camgirl whose life is complicated when someone who looks exactly like her begins impersonating her online.
The film flips the usual portrayals of sex work, giving the main character control of her own story, even if it’s a difficult journey. It’s surprisingly both celebratory of sexuality and reminiscent of Alfred Hitchcock – an unexpected but effective combination. Cam is a queer, explicit film that fearlessly explores female anger. As critic Jody Sirkin puts it, the film starts as a stylish social commentary but evolves into a complex techno-thriller, revealing the dangers of the internet and the realities of sex work. Scott Weinburg of Thrillist praises the script for tackling themes of loneliness, voyeurism, and identity loss, while also delivering a thrilling and twisty plot, largely thanks to Madeline Brewer’s excellent performance.
