It’s a big deal when a major villain falls in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While there are occasional comedic defeats, like Pepper Potts outsmarting Aldrich Killian in Iron Man 3, these are rare. Usually, the story builds a personal connection between the hero and villain, setting up the final showdown. For example, Loki enrages the Hulk in The Avengers, leading to a brutal payback. And in Avengers: Endgame, Thor gets early revenge on Thanos by beheading him.
A new villain, Doctor Doom, has arrived, and his plans are a mystery as we head into Avengers: Doomsday. It’s certain he’ll cause a lot of trouble, but not every hero will get the chance to be the one to defeat him. Here’s a ranking of all the heroes in Doomsday, based on how likely they are to win against Doom.
23) Gambit

Channing Tatum will reprise his comedic mutant role in the upcoming film Doomsday, following his popular appearance in Deadpool & Wolverine. Though Tatum says his character will be more serious this time, it’s difficult to see how throwing energy-powered cards will be effective against such a powerful villain like Doctor Doom.
22) Nightcrawler

In the beginning of X2, Nightcrawler impressively breaks into the White House and easily bypasses presidential security. However, Doctor Doomâs fortress will likely be much harder to penetrate, suggesting Alan Cummingâs character might be better off not participating in the final battle.
21) Beast

Generally, intelligence is more valuable than physical strength, provided there’s enough of it. Beast is one of the most intelligent characters in the Marvel Universe, and he’ll likely contribute to solving the problem with Doom. However, as a relatively new member of the team, it’s unlikely he’ll immediately take a leading role.
20) Cyclops

Cyclops is arguably the X-Men character most deserving of a comeback. The movies haven’t been kind to him, consistently overshadowing him with Wolverine and ultimately killing him off. It seems Scott Summers will likely have to wait for the X-Men to be reintroduced in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to finally get his chance to shine.
19) Professor X

Charles Xavier, the leader of the X-Men, is incredibly powerful, possessing the ability to control almost anyoneâs mind. However, the Marvel Cinematic Universe hasnât yet shown the full extent of his powers. Characters like Scarlet Witch have defeated him easily, and itâs likely Doctor Doom could do the same.
18) MâBaku

The people of Wakanda are known for their bravery and willingness to fight, even when the odds are stacked against them. In Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, MâBaku bravely takes a hit from Namor, even though he doesnât have any superpowers. While he probably wouldnât survive a blow from Doom, his courage is still admirable.
17) Red Guardian

In Doomsday, the New Avengers play a crucial role by being the first to find the Fantastic Fourâs ship. Although the team includes some powerful members, Red Guardian seems content just to be part of the action, and itâs more probable he wonât make it to the end of the movie.
16) Ghost

Ghost’s ability to phase through objects makes her much more powerful than most gadget-using humans. However, Thunderbolts showed that her powers can be neutralized, and Doctor Doom would likely take advantage of that weakness if she ever challenged him.
15) U.S. Agent

John Walker has accepted he’s not Steve Rogers, and he’s stopped trying to fill those shoes. Now calling himself U.S. Agent, he’s still incredibly powerful â arguably the strongest super-soldier on the New Avengers team. However, even a powerful punch isn’t enough to win against Doctor Doom.
14) Falcon

Sam Wilson chooses Joaquin Torres as his first member of the new Avengers, essentially guaranteeing he’ll survive for a while. However, it’s likely Torres’s protection won’t last beyond the midpoint of the upcoming ‘Doomsday’ storyline, which keeps Falcon from ranking too highly on this list.
13) Yelena Belova

Yelena Belova, the leader of the New Avengers, isn’t known for brute strength or flashy powers. Instead, she’s a brilliant strategist, particularly when fighting. While she might not defeat enemies with a single punch, she’s far from helpless in a crisis.
12) Ant-Man

Scott Lang is a surprisingly capable fighter, often overlooked for his skills. He performed well in the Battle of Earth during Endgame and even defeated Kang in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantamania. While Doctor Doom is a formidable opponent and wonât be easily fooled, itâs a mistake to underestimate Ant-Man.
11) Black Panther

Even without the Heart-Shaped Herb’s powers, Shuri is incredibly resourceful and uses her intelligence to help others. Now that she’s wearing the Black Panther suit, she’s become even more powerful. Doctor Doom will have a hard time facing her, both in battle and beyond.
10) Bucky

Honestly, I think a lot of people might underestimate Bucky when it comes to sheer power â he’s not even the strongest super soldier in this new Doomsday story. But I have a feeling Marvel won’t let his history with Tony Stark go to waste. Seeing Doom look like Tony is going to give Bucky a serious boost, and I’m really excited to see how that plays out. It’s going to add a whole other layer to the conflict!
9) Shang-Chi

Shang-Chi is arguably the most underappreciated character in Marvelâs Phase Four. While Marvel Studios has delayed plans for a sequel, they could cleverly integrate him into the upcoming Doomsday storyline. With the power of the Ten Rings, Shang-Chi would be a formidable opponent for any villain, including Doctor Doom.
8) Thor

Considering all the epic fights heâs been through, itâs surprising to see Thor still going strong! Heâs definitely regained his power in Thor: Love and Thunder. However, the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe might shift focus to newer heroes, potentially sidelining him in upcoming projects like Doomsday.
7) Sentry

The Thunderbolts quickly realize they’re no match for Sentry, who is far more powerful than the entire Avengers team and incredibly fast. Although Sentry is expected to reappear in Doomsday, he might have to hold back, because unleashing his full power could destroy the world.
6) Loki

In Season 2 of Loki, the trickster god sacrifices his own freedom to keep the multiverse safe. However, his reign might be short-lived, as Doctor Doom appears to have his sights set on taking over. But unseating Loki won’t be simple, as the Asgardian has learned some new skills.
5) Captain America

Steve Rogersâ defiant stand against Thanos perfectly embodies what it means to be Captain America. Now, Sam Wilson has taken on the role, becoming the new Star-Spangled Man. Though he doesnât have the same super strength, he makes up for it with courage and determination. Doctor Doom would be wise not to underestimate him as a force in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
4) The Thing

From the moment Franklin Richards is born, Ben Grimm becomes very dedicated to being a good uncle. He adores his nephew and is fiercely protective of him. However, Doctor Doom doesn’t feel the same way, and that means he’ll have to face The Thing’s anger.
3) Human Torch

Similar to his friend Ben, Johnny Storm would risk anything to protect Franklin. However, Johnny has more untapped potential than The Thing. Once Johnny fully masters his powers, heâll become a major threat Doctor Doom will have to contend with.
2) Invisible Woman

Sue Storm is the standout character in The Fantastic Four: First Steps. She bravely faces Galactus alone, a fight that initially costs her life. Though sheâs given a second chance, she wonât hesitate to sacrifice it all to protect her child.
1) Mister Fantastic

The central focus of Doomsday is establishing the intense conflict between Reed Richards and Victor von Doom, a key element of the comic books. Reed will undoubtedly leverage his intelligence to defeat Doom, because if he fails, the consequences could be catastrophic.
Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters on December 18, 2026.
