For many Pokemon fans, the thrill of finding a rare, differently colored “Shiny” Pokemon – whether in the mobile game Pokemon Go or the main series games – is a key part of the fun. Shiny Pokemon have been around since the original red Gyarados in Pokemon Gold and Silver, but recently, hunting for them has become even more popular. The Pokemon Company has noticed this trend, and like previous games, Pokemon Legends: Z-A includes features to help players find Shinies. However, some players feel these features make it too easy.
Starting with the release of Pokémon Black 2 and White 2 in 2012, players have been able to increase their chances of finding rare, Shiny Pokémon. This is done using an item called the Shiny Charm, which improves the odds of encountering Shiny Pokémon in the wild and in other situations. Obtaining a Shiny Charm is always a challenge, and players usually earn it after completing the main story. However, some fans believe that getting the Shiny Charm in Pokémon Legends: Z-A is excessively difficult.
Finishing Mabel’s Research to Earn the Shiny Charm is a Grind

As a huge Pokémon fan, I’m used to having to catch all the Pokémon in a game to get the Shiny Charm – it’s kind of a tradition! But the Legends games always do things a little differently. In Legends: Arceus and now Legends: Z-A, it’s not about filling up the whole Pokédex. Instead, you earn the Shiny Charm by completing research tasks, which is a really interesting change of pace!
In Pokemon Legends: Arceus, unlocking the Shiny Charm required completing extensive research for every Pokemon – a challenging but traditional requirement for earning it, essentially ‘catching them all’. However, Pokemon Legends: Z-A changes things: the Shiny Charm is now earned by finishing all of Mabel’s research requests. Players are discovering that reaching Level 100 actually makes completing one of the hardest tasks impossible, creating a frustrating roadblock.
1000 battles is pure evil.

Reaching Level 50 with Mabel’s Research and getting the Shiny Charm doesn’t require completing all of her requests. But, earning enough points to unlock it does force you to accept a particularly difficult task. Specifically, you’ll have to win 1,000 battles, which is necessary to get the Shiny Charm. Many players feel this is much harder than earning the Charm in previous games, with one Reddit user calling the battle requirement “diabolical.”
Completing the Pokedex is a big challenge for many Pokémon trainers, and the series’ core idea encourages players to try. However, battles against other trainers are often a point of frustration for fans, even in games focused on battling like Pokémon Legends: Z-A. While these battles offer rewards like money and experience, many players consider them unnecessary. Requiring players to complete 1,000 of these battles to earn the Shiny Charm in Z-A has proven to be a particularly controversial decision for those who enjoy collecting rare, shiny Pokémon.
Requiring 1000 battles to get shiny charm is a stupid choice

You can definitely find Shiny Pokemon without a Shiny Charm. However, the Charm significantly improves your chances, making the hunt less time-consuming. Some players don’t enjoy the effort of battling repeatedly after finishing the main game, though others appreciate this new requirement. It’s a different approach than simply filling out the Pokedex, and it emphasizes battling – a key part of the game. Still, battling 1,000 Pokemon is a considerable task beyond what most players will naturally achieve.
