The BBC has officially announced when “The Narrow Road to the Deep North,” a World War II drama, will make its debut. This production is said to feature an up-and-coming actor who’s been buzzed about as a potential candidate for the next 007 role.
According to the acclaimed novel that clinched the Man Booker Prize in 2014 (written by Richard Flanagan), this series narrates the tale of a fictitious soldier named Dorrigo Evans, portrayed by the rising stars Jacob Elordi from Euphoria and Saltburn.
This narrative explores three distinct phases of his life: the first is set right before his battlefield assignment, the second delves into his years as a captive, and the third follows him many decades later as he grapples with his past and his life’s events.
The television series ‘The Narrow Road to the Deep North’ was broadcasted on Prime Video internationally in April, but it won’t debut until 9:15pm on BBC One on July 20th, 2025 within the UK.
All episodes will be available to stream on iPlayer as a box set from that date too.
Sue Deeks, the chief of BBC program acquisition, remarked that “The Narrow Road to the Deep North” is an intricate, stunning, and emotionally intense series. It delicately combines various phases in the life of surgeon Dorrigo Evans, from the initial thrill of young love to the uncompromising portrayal of his experiences as a prisoner of war in occupied Burma.
“We are so very pleased to bring this truly exceptional adaptation to BBC viewers.”
In a new role, Odessa Young from The Staircase and Mothering Sunday will be acting alongside as Amy Mulvaney, the character who has won Dorrigo’s affection. Meanwhile, the ensemble cast includes Ciarán Hinds (from Belfast), Olivia DeJonge (Elvis), and Essie Davis (Apple Cider Vinegar).
In my view, “The Narrow Road to the Deep North,” masterfully produced by Curio Pictures’ Executive Producers Jo Porter and Rachel Gardner, is a sweeping narrative that underscores the resilience of love even in the most extreme conditions.
Delighted to be part of the team that breathes life into this remarkable tale, collaborating with creators Shaun Grant, Justin Kurzel, novelist Richard Flanagan, and an exceptional cast and crew. We’re eager for audiences to witness it!

Actor Elordi, who currently leads the series, has been identified by Variety as a top contender for assuming the role of James Bond in the upcoming Amazon MGM Studios productions, given that Daniel Craig will have concluded his tenure with the 2021 film “No Time to Die”.
An Australian thespian, originating from Brisbane, is speculated to be vying for a role alongside contenders such as Tom Holland, Spider-Man’s portrayer, and Harris Dickinson, who has been cast as John Lennon in Sam Mendes’ Beatles biopics.
Previously suggested actors like Aaron Taylor-Johnson from the film “28 Years Later” and Idris Elba known for his role in “Luther”, are reportedly no longer in consideration. The production team seems to be focusing on someone younger than 30 years old, who will help transition the series into a fresh new era.
The Narrow Road to the Deep North is coming to BBC One and iPlayer on Sunday 20th July 2025.
