Many consider The Lord of the Rings trilogy to be the greatest fantasy movie adaptation ever made. However, some characters from J.R.R. Tolkien’s books didn’t make it into Peter Jackson’s films, and the upcoming movie The Hunt for Gollum could add them to the story. Although The Hunt for Gollum isn’t coming out until 2027, it has a lot of promise. It will revisit the timeline of the original trilogy and bring Peter Jackson back as a producer, alongside some returning actors.
Andy Serkis will return as Gollum, and fans are eager to see Ian McKellen and Viggo Mortensen reprise their roles as Gandalf and Aragorn, given the film’s focus on those characters. The Hunt for Gollum is a great chance to revisit beloved moments from the original films while also adding new details from Tolkien’s books. The movie will explore Aragorn’s initial search for Gollum, a part of the story only hinted at in the source material. While bringing back familiar faces makes sense, the film could also surprise viewers by including characters who were absent from the original trilogy.
3) Tom Bombadil

Although Tom Bombadil appears in the Lord of the Rings books, Peter Jackson’s films leave him out of The Fellowship of the Ring. This makes sense, as his encounter with Frodo and the other hobbits isn’t essential to the main story. Jackson’s decision demonstrates that the character can be removed without significantly affecting the plot – which is a smart move when adapting a popular book. Plus, Tom Bombadil is an enigmatic character, and trying to portray him accurately on screen could easily miss the mark.
Season 2 of The Rings of Power took a chance by including Tom Bombadil, and despite the show still sparking debate, the addition worked well. This proves the character can be adapted, raising the possibility that The Hunt for Gollum might do the same. We could see Gandalf or Aragorn encounter him during their search, as Gandalf already knows of Tom Bombadil. Warner Bros. could potentially bring the character to life, and while it would be trickier, even his wife, Goldberry, isn’t out of the question.
2) Elladan And/Or Elrohir

I always loved Elrond and Arwen in Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings films, but it was a shame his sons, Elladan and Elrohir, were left out. They play a part in the books, helping Aragorn during a key battle, but I understand why the filmmakers had to make tough choices with so much already happening. Still, I’m really excited about The Hunt for Gollum because it could bring Gandalf and Aragorn back to Rivendell, and it would feel right to see them connect with the Elves. That makes me hopeful we might finally get to see Arwen’s brothers on screen – maybe even both of them!
Bringing back Elrond could be tricky, as Hugo Weaving has said he doesn’t plan to return to The Lord of the Rings series. However, his sons, Elladan and Elrohir, could be introduced to work around his absence. While it would be strange to replace such a well-known actor, The Hunt for Gollum could feature Elladan and Elrohir communicating with the other characters on their father’s behalf. This would be a clever way to acknowledge characters missing from the books and avoid the potential problems of recasting a major role.
1) Thranduil

It makes sense that Rivendell is featured in The Hunt for Gollum, but a visit to Mirkwood is essential, as that’s where Aragorn takes Gollum after finding him. This means we should see Thranduil, Legolas’s father and the Elven king of Mirkwood, in the next Lord of the Rings movie. He wasn’t included in Peter Jackson’s original trilogy because Tolkien’s books don’t focus much on him. Since Aragorn’s pursuit of Gollum has been removed from The Fellowship of the Ring, there’s less reason to highlight the Elves of Mirkwood—aside from Legolas, naturally. The books also don’t go into detail about what Thranduil was doing during the War of the Ring.
Lee Pace’s portrayal of Thranduil in The Hobbit trilogy was truly memorable, so it would be great to see him return in The Hunt for Gollum. This new film offers a perfect chance to delve deeper into his character and show audiences why he’s so beloved by fans. Plus, with Orlando Bloom potentially reprising his role as Legolas (according to Deadline), we might even get to see Thranduil and Legolas interact – a fresh dynamic that would also delight fans of the original cast.
