‘Buffy’ Revival Director Confirms New Series Is a Sequel

Good news for fans of Buffy the Vampire Slayer! An updated version of the show is in the works, and it’s already generating excitement. Award-winning director Chloé Zhao is leading the revival, and will direct the first episode. Original star Sarah Michelle Gellar is returning to reprise her role as Buffy Summers and will also be an executive producer. The new series will feature Buffy guiding a new slayer named Nova, who will be played by an as-yet unnamed actress.

In a recent interview with Variety, director Zhao discussed her vision for the Buffy the Vampire Slayer revival. She emphasized that it won’t be a reboot, but rather a continuation of the original story. Zhao made it clear she has no intention of recasting the iconic characters and confirmed that Sarah Michelle Gellar will return. She also stated that while the show aims to be accessible to new viewers, it will remain respectful of the original series and may include appearances from familiar faces. Zhao then added:

We’re definitely planning to bring back beloved original characters. The show is designed to appeal to both longtime fans and a new generation – it’s not just for kids. We really value our fanbase and want them to feel represented, while also welcoming new viewers. It’s important to us that both existing and new fans enjoy the show.

Who Could Return for ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer?’

The WB / UPN

Currently, only Sarah Michelle Gellar has officially confirmed her return for the revival. Fans are eager to see Alyson Hannigan, Anthony Stewart Head, and James Marsters reprise their roles as Willow, Giles, and Spike. While Eliza Dushku, who played Faith, has stepped away from acting to become a therapist, sadly, Michelle Tractenberg, who played Dawn Summers, will not be returning due to her passing on February 26, 2025.

Fans are wondering if the new Buffy the Vampire Slayer revival will include characters from the spin-off series, Angel. David Boreanaz, who played Angel, first appeared on Buffy before starring in his own show, which lasted five seasons. Since then, he’s continued to work steadily on television with long-running roles in Bones (12 seasons) and Seal Team (which ended in 2024). There’s also the possibility the revival could bring back Cordelia Chase, played by Charisma Carpenter, who originally appeared on Buffy and, despite dying on Angel, could be resurrected.

As a longtime fan, I’m excited to see Sarah Michelle Gellar back as the focus of this new Buffy the Vampire Slayer series. From what I understand about the creator’s vision, it seems they’re aiming for something similar to the success of Cobra Kai – honoring the original characters we love while introducing a fresh cast that a new generation can connect with. We can expect to see it on Hulu sometime in 2026, though they haven’t announced an exact release date just yet.
