10 Marvel Heroes Killed By Infinity Stones, Ranked By How Badly They Died

The Infinity Stones – originally called Infinity Gems – first appeared in Marvel Comics with the story Thanos Quest, which set the stage for Infinity Gauntlet. Their origins actually go back to the 1970s, in stories featuring Adam Warlock, who used the Soul Gem as a powerful weapon. These Stones would eventually become incredibly important in the Marvel Universe. When combined, the Stones grant the user near-limitless power, allowing them to do virtually anything. Thanos is famous for wielding the Infinity Gauntlet and using its power to inflict devastating damage on his enemies.

The Infinity Gauntlet was a huge success, particularly the epic battle in issue #4. Thanos clashed with Earth’s mightiest heroes, and the fight resulted in many losses. The Infinity Stones are incredibly powerful, and sadly, ten Marvel heroes were defeated by them in tragic fashion.

10) Nova — Transformed to Cubes and Smashed

Nova, the sole remaining member of the New Warriors, fought against Thanos. Known for his incredible speed and strength as part of the Nova Corps, he attempted to strike Thanos, but the Mad Titan barely noticed. Before Nova could launch another attack, Thanos instantly transformed him into a pile of colorful cubes, which crashed to the ground. Thanos then began destroying the cubes. It was a quick and relatively painless death, as Nova likely didn’t feel anything when he was transformed and destroyed.

9) Thor — Transformed Into Glass and Smashed

During the battle against Thanos in Infinity Gauntlet #4, Thor – specifically the Eric Masterson version – repeatedly attacked Thanos, despite not being the strongest Thor. Thanos eventually grew frustrated and turned Thor into glass. Nova intervened, preventing Thanos from capitalizing on this, but after dealing with Nova, Thanos punched the glass Thor. Similar to Nova’s fate, it wasn’t a particularly painful death; since he was already glass, he likely didn’t feel the impact of being shattered.

8) The Vision — Unphased and Circuitry Torn Out

Vision, a powerful Avenger, repeatedly attacked Thanos, much like Thor did. He used his ability to phase through objects, appearing from the ground to fire energy beams at the Mad Titan. However, these blasts didn’t harm Thanos, mostly just irritating him. Vision tried this tactic a second time, which proved fatal. Thanos reacted quickly, solidifying Vision and then ripping out his internal circuits, killing him instantly. Because Vision wasn’t wired to feel pain like humans, his death was likely quick and painless.

7) Cloak — Exploded from Within

Cloak witnessed Dagger’s death during the Snap and immediately joined the fight against Thanos, who held the Infinity Gauntlet. While Cloak’s abilities are primarily for teleportation, he can also use them to trap opponents in the Dark Dimension. Captain America saw Cloak use his powers to surround Thanos with a dark void, briefly giving him hope. Sadly, that hope was short-lived, as Thanos destroyed Cloak from the inside. It was clearly a painful attack; Cloak was visibly sweating, indicating he felt everything before the explosion, and it was undoubtedly unpleasant.

6) Quasar — His Quantum Bands Destroyed and Then Killed by an Energy Blast

Quasar is a really cool, but often overlooked, cosmic hero in the Marvel Universe. Back in 1991, he starred in his own comic book series – where I first discovered the art of Greg Capullo – and played a significant role wielding the Quantum Bands, originally used by the first Captain Marvel. He even faced off against Thanos after Thor and Nova had fallen, but his bravery proved costly. Thanos responded by destroying the Quantum Bands, instantly disintegrating Wendell and causing him excruciating pain as he lost his hands. It was a swift, but brutal, end.

5) Spider-Man — Beaten to Death by Thanos’s Creation Terraxia

This death, though indirect, is still caused by the Infinity Stones, and I’m including it. Thanos tried to impress Death itself by causing massive destruction, even wiping out half of all life, but it didn’t work. So, he created Terraxia to make Death jealous. Terraxia then fought the heroes and managed to surprise Spider-Man, ultimately killing him by repeatedly hitting him with a rock – a particularly gruesome way to die. She also quickly killed Iron Man by ripping off his head, but Spider-Man’s death was far more agonizing.

4) She-Hulk and Namor — Overwhelmed by a Fungal Bloom

This scene was truly disturbing. Namor and She-Hulk aggressively attacked Thanos, attempting to defeat him with their incredible strength. Instead of fighting back, Thanos simply touched them on the chest, and a strange, fungal growth immediately began to spread across their bodies. They desperately tried to rip it off, but it grew too quickly, consuming them. They likely suffocated as the fungus overwhelmed them, and the entire experience was terrifying as they frantically tried to remove it.

3) Cyclops — Suffocated by a Cube of Energy

Cyclops, the last member of the original X-Factor team, sought revenge on Thanos for the deaths of his teammates and other X-Men. He teamed up with Scarlet Witch to fight Thanos, unleashing powerful optic blasts. He helplessly watched Thanos kill Wanda, and desperately tried to harm the seemingly invincible villain. However, Thanos trapped Cyclops in an energy cube, blocking his powers and cutting off his air supply. Cyclops suffocated while fully conscious, his situation made even more desperate as Captain America tried, and failed, to break the cube. The mutant leader died in terror.

2) Scarlet Witch — Had Her Hex Turned on Her and Burnt to Death

Scarlet Witch is currently one of the most powerful heroes around, with the ability to manipulate reality. While she isn’t strong enough to defeat the Infinity Stones, she could put up a good fight against them now. However, during the events of Infinity Gauntlet, she wasn’t as developed, and it proved disastrous. She and Cyclops attacked Thanos, but he used the Power Gem to reflect her own energy back at her. Despite increasing her power, she couldn’t affect Thanos, and ultimately, she was overwhelmed and destroyed by her own abilities, essentially burning to death.

1) Wolverine — His Bones Turned Into Spongy Rubber

Wolverine faced countless tough battles, and wasn’t afraid of a fight he couldn’t win. He fearlessly attacked Thanos, leaping forward and slashing at the Mad Titan’s chest with all six claws. Despite his bravery, Thanos easily defeated him, turning Wolverine’s bones into a rubbery, fragile state. The force of his own body weight then twisted and likely destroyed his internal organs. It was a particularly gruesome death, made even worse by his powerful healing factor, and remains one of the most shocking moments in Infinity Gauntlet #4, a comic known for its intense violence.
