The anticipated third season of Foundation will debut on July 11th (Friday). Initial reviews have started coming in, and at present, it’s boasting a flawless 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes‘ Tomatometer. It’s important to note that only seven reviews have been considered so far, suggesting the score could change as more episodes are released. Despite this, given the high expectations surrounding Foundation and its previous success, it won’t come as a shock to many viewers to see such a high rating for Season 3.
Foundation is a flexible interpretation of Isaac Asimov’s science fiction novel series titled the same way, developed by David S. Goyer and Josh Friedman for Apple TV+. The series features Jared Harris as Hari Seldon, a mathematician who has devised a mathematical method to predict future events based on probable human behavior. Lou Llobell stars as Gaal Dornick, his protegee. After foreseeing the collapse of the galactic empire, they establish a “foundation” with the aim of preserving as much civilization as possible during the impending dark ages. Meanwhile, Lee Pace portrays Emperor Cleon, the ruler of that empire who is struggling to maintain his grip on power.
The prophecy foretells a prolonged period of darkness, approximately 30 millennia in duration, which Seldon’s scheme seeks to shorten significantly, limiting it to merely a thousand years. Consequently, the narrative unfolds over an extended timeframe with minimal recurring characters. Many adaptations address this challenge by finding creative methods to prolong character lifespans or resurrect them. This strategy maintains an air of tension for both book enthusiasts and newcomers anticipating the screen adaptation.
In Season 3, the plot leaps forward by 152 years and introduces a significant challenge to the foundation’s objectives: a human named “The Mule,” who possesses psychic abilities due to mutation, played by Pilou Asbæk. This character employs mind control to rise as a formidable warlord amidst the decaying empire, accumulating power that jeopardizes both the foundation and the remnants of the old order. The intriguing premise promises some of the most thrilling trailers the series has produced so far, with action taking place in space and on land, as well as an uneasy alliance between Cleon and the foundation.
Excitedly, I can hardly wait for the upcoming Season 3 of “Foundation,” premiering on Apple TV+ this coming Friday, July 11th. The trailers have been tantalizing, and the critical acclaim it’s received has only heightened my anticipation. If the new episodes can match up to these promises, I’m in for a treat! For those who haven’t yet experienced the series, previous seasons are currently streaming on Apple TV+. And, if you’re a bookworm like me, Asimov’s novels are available in print, digital, and audiobook formats, making it easy to dive deeper into this captivating universe before Season 3 begins!
