In the last ten years or so, anime’s popularity and critical acclaim have skyrocketed, as evidenced by recent data from a major streaming service like Netflix. Moreover, there are some intriguing insights into how fans engage with anime and which series are currently dominating the scene. The upward trend is expected to continue in the future, considering the abundance of options and the convenience of watching them today. It’s no surprise that anime has become so widespread.
After the Anime Expo this year, Netflix revealed through their news blog that more than half of its global audience enjoys anime, which translates to about 150 million people worldwide. In fact, viewership has tripled over the past five years, and in 2024 alone, no less than 33 anime series made it into Netflix’s Global Top 10 rankings. This announcement was made during the event where Netflix unveiled fresh information and upcoming projects, including the anticipated second season of “Cyberpunk Edgerunners.” As the streaming giant moves forward, it remains a significant player in the anime streaming market.
Anime’s Popularity On Netflix Is Unbelievable
Approximately 90% of viewers tend to choose the dubbed versions, which isn’t surprising considering that in recent times, it has become standard practice to simulcast popular anime in dubbed form simultaneously with their Japanese releases. Shows like “My Happy Marriage“, “Dandadan“, and “Delicious in Dungeon” are good examples of this trend. Additionally, an increasing number of series are being dubbed, with Netflix providing 33 different subtitles and languages to satisfy fans worldwide.
In a rather predictable turn of events, the most popular anime streaming on Netflix turned out to be “Sakamoto Days,” an assassin action manga from Shonen Jump, renowned for its blend of intense action sequences, captivating character designs, and sprinkles of humor. This combination seems to have struck a chord with many, explaining its rapid ascent in popularity. Other notable anime on Netflix within the past year include “Dandadan,” “My Happy Marriage,” “Dragon Ball Daima,” “Delicious in Dungeon,” “Demon Slayer,” and several others. Notably, Netflix’s exclusive anime have been doing exceptionally well, and with upcoming titles like “The Summer Hikaru Died” and the remake of “One Piece” on the horizon, it’s safe to say that the number of Netflix users tuning into anime will only keep soaring higher.
